Sidings A haiku set by Dawn McLachlan In the grey city Hemmed in by rivers of steel Beneath concrete cliffs An island of green In the whorls of the railway Pressed in by fencing There, poppies still grow And foxgloves reach for the light Buttercups glow gold Inch by steady inch Bindweed stretches out tendrils Disguising chain link Bright swathes of daisies Buffeted by train slipstream Shimmer in twilight Moonlight silvers rails As a fox cuts through shadows Like a rusting knife Night trains rumble on In darkness, sidings unseen But vibrant with life This small patch of dirt This haven.
