There was a rebellious comfort that came from being on HRT. Like flipping off God before running head-first into the open arms of a sin. There were moments where I was so relieved to be who I was. Other times, though, it was a bruise of a reminder. I could never forget how easily Kahorn had said ‘transgender’. I tried the word in my mouth, forcing my tongue to form the syllables and working my throat to make the noises. It didn’t sound right; it didn’t feel right. As though I shouldn’t be saying it, an almost-slur. ‘Transgender’ meant something different. Someone to be hated. Someone who was hated for a reason. Because why else would they be hated? They had done something wrong. Desperately, I didn’t want to be trans. I didn’t want to be hated. I just wanted to be Callum.
In honour of #TransAwarenessWeek, I wanted to share this snippet of Callum's complicated feelings around being trans. Part of the story is about him accepting his trans identity.

Yet again, Callum is a mirror of the person I was in my early transition/pre-t, and I feel that the flashbacks are a great portrayal of his inner world.

I very rarely talk about the side characters in "From the Sea Fret", however my favourite would be Tegan Pruitt. She's the daughter of the town's pastor, and sorta the belle of the town.

I felt sorry for him; it would be a long drive back. He was muttering something to himself, and the bus slowed down to a crawl. Glancing out my window, I realised what was making him uncomfortable. People stared. Children stopped playing, conversations ended, and everyone was looking. My mouth went dry as the townsfolk watched us pass, and I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand on edge. “Every damn time,” The bus driver shivered, “This place gives me the fuckin’ willies.” I couldn’t tell if he was talking to himself, or meant to include me. I didn’t answer, I was glued to my window.
The people of Perne have a strange way of welcoming Callum Point to their community.
This isn't the strangest thing that Callum encounters in 'From the Sea Fret' though, it's just the beginning.

I'd say it's a tie between the visuals and how the character feels about said visuals. Where they feel they stand in that place.
For example, in "From the Sea Fret" Callum (the MC) is almost always longing for/leaning towards/looking out to the foggy ocean.

Outlined text over a dark blue ocean. The horizon is obscured by fog. The text reads: From the Sea Fret. Callum Point is a queer transman with a complicated past. He’s haunted by all that happened to him, and he’s eager to leave it all behind. He moves to Perne to live life on his terms. He’s hoping that the small fishing town will give him the respite he craves. What he finds instead is a town rife with secrecy. The people are strange, and unwelcoming. However, the thing that keeps Callum up at night is the ocean. In Perne, it’s always foggy. Worse, there’s always a thick band of mist obscuring the horizon. One day, Callum makes a discovery that catapults him down a path he can’t come back from. But maybe that’s just the thing that will help him escape his past.
'From the Sea Fret' was written in a frenzied state of transmasc anger.
I cracked open memories from my early transition, and mixed it with what I'm seeing happen today.
It's desperate, it's agonizing, and full of ugly feelings.
