The winter surveys of #GLAMOS are just around the corner! ❄️⛰️

Yesterday we headed into the field with a big group for a safety training to refresh our techniques and safety protocols. Now let’s hope the #glaciers get plenty of snow so they’re well prepared for spring and summer. 🌨️

Latest #GLAMOS report on #glacier change in #Switzerland (2025) out today🧊🇨🇭

** Swiss glaciers lost ~3% of their remaining ice in one year due to a dry winter and a warm summer.

**159 glaciers (11%) have already disappeared.

Ein kurzer Überblick => met.to/6k7p (km)

Da...

Gletscher-Monitoring #GLAMOS - Studienleiter @matthias-huss.bsky.social :

[2/2] This year’s melt was driven by a snow-poor winter and summer heatwaves. Glaciers below 3k m lost over 2 m of ice. Shrinking glaciers also destabilize mountains, as seen in May, when a rock–ice avalanche buried Blatten in the Lötschental.

The Swiss Cryosphere Report 2024 is out: Despite heavy snow, Swiss glaciers lost >2% of their volume. Permafrost hit record levels as heatwaves & Saharan dust take a toll on snow & ice. 🧊📉 #Kryosphärenbericht2024 #GLAMOS @slfdavos.bsky.social #PERMOS @scnat.ch

The Glacier Loss Day occurred by mid-August in 2010-2020, and should be in October to permit a balance with climate. Heavy times!
Glaciers throughout Switzerland are equally affected. Little winter snow, early heat.

Cold and sunny up on the #Findelen #Glacier last Friday, where part of our team carried out mass balance measurements. Snow cover? Barely. Another record winter drought, impacting not just Swiss glaciers, but also our fieldwork, with increasingly tricky crevasse conditions. #GLAMOS #AirZermatt

📢 The 2024 Glaciological Report by #GLAMOS is out, now in its 143rd/144th year. Swiss glaciers are shrinking rapidly, losing 6% of their volume in 21/22 and another 4% in 22/23. Some areas saw ice thinning by over 4m, breaking all melt rate records.
