It's a day of clam seas and dry, grey-ish skies. The blue ice provides a stunning pop of colour. There's a sea bird (gull) in the middle of the action. Patagonia weather is changeable, three seasons per day. Brüggen Glacier / Pío XI Glacier, much too wide for even my 14 mm, this is a 4-frame stitch. The face is about 5 km / 3.1 miles across. The glacier is considered "stable", not growing or retreating.

Austrian glaciers disintegrating due to climate change, say scientists Scientists are warning that glaciers in the Austrian Alps are not just shrinking, but are disintegrating, because of climate change. The latest report on glaciers by the Austrian Alpine Club say they "continue to shrink dramatically in length, area and volume". "Many glaciers are not only shrinking in length but are increasingly entering a phase of structural disintegration," said Andreas Kellerer-Pirklbauer from the University of Graz. "Exposed rock ledges, sections of ice breaking away and glacier tongues collapsing in on themselves are increasingly shaping the landscape." In its annual report, the Austrian Alpine Club, said 94 out of the 96 glaciers that it measured over the past year in Austria, had shrunk. The report said the most badly affected glaciers during this period were the Alpeiner Ferner glacier in Tyrol which shrunk by 114.3m and the Stubacher Sonnblickkees in the province of Salzburg, which lost 103.9m in length. Austria's largest glacier, the Pasterze in Carinthia, also continues to shrink. The report said it was very likely that the glacier tongue would break off in the coming years, splitting the glacier in two. The report said the trend was once again due to climate change. "A warm winter with little snow...

A heavily glaciated and snow-covered mountain peak in the Alaska Range catches warm pink and orange alpenglow on its upper slopes and summit while the lower flanks and glacier basin below remain in deep blue shadow. A glacial cirque with exposed blue-green ice is visible at the center of the mountain's bowl. The foreground is a broad snow-covered glacier surface. Photographed from the Loket Tributary of the Black Rapids Glacier, Alaska, April.

Alpine glacier holds history dating back to the Romans. And it's melting-fast. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. Email address Thank you! Deep inside the frozen Eastern Alps, the Weißseespitze ice cap (pronounced VICE-zay-shpitt-suh) sits at almost 11,482 feet (3,500 meters) above sea level. Overlooking the mountainous border between Austria and Italy, Weißseespitze is an alpine glacier. It formed as layers of snowfall gradually compacted into dense glacial ice, trapping airborne particles that hold important clues about Earth’s past atmosphere. The oldest ice contained in Weißseespitze dates back roughly 6,000 years to the mid-Holocene, a warm period following the close of the last global ice age. Scientists say the ice cap is an extraordinary trove of data about pre-industrial human activity and environmental change. But rising global temperatures due to climate change are rapidly melting the glacier’s surface, forcing researchers to move quickly to capture the critical information frozen inside Weißseespitze. Atmosphere frozen in time From 2019 to 2024, an international team of scientists embarked on a series of research expeditions at the dome-shaped ice cap, drilling down to the bedrock to extract meters-long ice cores. These long cylinders of glacial ice packed with layers of dust, pollutants, and smoke are frozen time capsules that scientists can use...

The Middle Fork of the Flathead River forms the southwest border of Glacier National Park. This view, from near Park Headquarters, shows the river as it flows under the West Glacier bridge. At night some of the lights of West Glacier may be visible. During the summer, watch for rafters. Several commercial rafting businesses use this section of river. In the winter, the only activity along the river might be the occasional coyote or deer or a really cold kayaker.

This view from near the Scenic Point Trailhead looks northwest to the Dawson Pass area. The mountains in the foreground are Sinopah Mountain on the left and Rising Wolf Mountain on the right. In the distance Lone Walker Mountain is just visible over the shoulder of Sinopah and Helen Mountain is just to the right of center. One of the best hikes in the park works its way up to Dawson Pass and then continues north along the spine of the Continental Divide to Pitakakan Pass. Five miles of high-elevation hiking that is second to none.

This view to the northeast from the summit of Apgar Mountain provides a spectacular view of Lake McDonald and the mountains in the distance. To the left of the lake are Stanton Mountain and Mt. Vaught (Stanton just in front of Vaught) and then just to the right the Garden Wall. The Continental Divide follows the crest of the Garden Wall. Continuing to the right are Mt. Cannon and Mt. Brown. The last mountain clearly visible to the right is Edwards Mountain. Apgar Lookout is at the summit and one of the more popular hikes on the west side.

To many visitors to the park, this view is their first introduction to the spectacular scenery of Glacier National Park. This iconic view from Apgar, at the foot of Lake McDonald, really shows what Glacier is all about...big glacially carved lakes, vast wild views of the high peaks along the Continental Divide, and the ever-changing forests that blanket much of the lower elevations. It's no wonder that for many people when they think of Glacier, they think of this view.

The view from this webcam can be changed by park staff and occasionally we will move it and provide a different aspect of the view from the St. Mary Visitor Center. We hope to be able to provide close views of the elk in the fall and winter, tighter views of the mountains, and occasionally people at the Entrance Station and in the Visitor Center.

Thanks to the Glacier National Park Conservancy for their continued support of the park's webcam installations.

Many Glacier is often referred to as the Heart of the Park. This spectacular view is very similar to the Two Medicine Valley in that there is a dominant peak, in this case Grinnell Point, separating two valleys. To the right is the Swiftcurrent Valley and just up and over the wall in the background is Granite Park. To the left is the valley that leads up to Grinnell Glacier, one of the most popular trails in the park. The Many Glacier Hotel sits at the edge of Swiftcurrent Lake and is an outstanding example of the type of architecture that was so common in western national parks in early 1900. A walk through its soaring lobby is a must see when you visit Many Glacier.
