This is where the word (man or male gender) is attached to include all humans. Words such as mankind, rather than perhaps humankind try to associate male gender as inclusive of all genders when it isn't.

#Gendered storybooks: In picture books, not only were boys more likely to experience pain (53%) than girls (29%); but girls were more likely to cry (78%) when faced with pain than boys (22%). There is, indeed, a need to revisit #LGBT #SOGIESC in literature.
