A ghost sign reading Woolworths, above a black hoarding.
When I moved to Tooting Broadway a long time ago there was an M&S and a Woolworths opposite the station. Then Primark and Wilko took their place. Now Wilko has gone, M&S is coming back, and before it opens in the Wilko building we have a fleeting reminder of the much missed Woolworths. #ghostsigns

Brick gable end with a medley of fading painted signs visible as layers on top of each other. The effect leads to confusion as to which letters, words, and slogans belong to which signs/brands, but there is an intrinsic beauty in the onion-like layers of history that they represent.
Wow, check out this monster palimpsest from Poughkeepsie, New York. In addition to the dominant Uneeda Biscuit layer, there is at least one other for what looks like Liberty Tobacco.

Virtually illegible, faded cream/white colored ghost sign on the side wall of a brick building. Someone appears to have more recently written or traced the letters “PA PA” in black on the ghost sign’s top left quadrant. Apart from that, no distinct words are visible
A narrow vertical sliver of a chipped & faded, yet noticeably colorful, ghost sign is visible on the side of a brick building; an adjacent building obscures the rest of the ghost sign & wall.
The pale, largely-faded letters of an old ghost sign advertising some sort of “paper manufacturers” and their “paper boxes” can be made out running horizontally along the top portion of a brick building’s side wall. Visible a bit below is a portion of the lake street L steel superstructure, with a W Lake St street sign.
Pale faded letters from a ghost sign are interrupted by their brick building’s evidently more recent addition of windows. The visible portion of the still-legible top line reads “& TARRANT MAN’F’G. CO.”. above the building, a crescent moon is strikingly visible.

Painted letters cling to brick like a promise made when travel was slower and rooms were earned by the mile. Hotel Slade still announces itself—once in fading paint, once in metal—while its windows look past the present, holding the quiet dignity of a place that outlived its purpose. A parked truck, a bare tree, a winter street: time moves on, but the name stays, insisting that what was here still matters.
