A library book lays on a light pink blanket in a waffle weave pattern. It is “Katabasis” by R.F. Kuang. The light is soft and warm - evening light from bedside lamps.
The book is a deep, forest green with gold lettering. An illustration of a tall building stretching from below sight is centered on the front. The building has no roof allowing you to see down into its center. There are no floors, just a staircase spiraling away and down the inside walls. Two figures are pictured, one running the staircase, the other working a math problem on a blackboard. Stacks of paper on the top tier of the building staircase are flapping away as loose leaves out into space. The pages form another spiral fluttering out, around and toward the reader in a line. The image gives much suggestion of movement, possibly even hurry.
… 12 hours later. I’m halfway through and while it’s not my fav book of Kuang’s so far… I’m probably going to make poor choices about bedtime tonight over it. 😂
