Restoring pronghorn access to winter habitat - U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (.gov) Pronghorn aren’t the first animal people usually think of when they hear the word migration. But in North America, 50% of the pronghorn population migrates through sections of Wyoming each spring and fall. One notable migration journey is 150 miles each way, from around Grand Teton National Park up to the Upper Green River Basin. Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program staff are working with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and others to identify and remove barriers to migration. Keep reading to learn more uniquely North American mammal and how we at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are working with others to ensure they have a bright future. Wyoming’s Red Desert The southwestern corner of Wyoming is home to the Red Desert. This expansive area covers more than six million acres and is characterized by high elevation steppe habitat that has supported people and wildlife since time immemorial. This inspiring landscape, largely unchanged over time, is a symbol of the wild American West. Hundreds of thousands of people traversed this unyielding landscape on the Oregon, California and Mormon Pioneer Trails. The South Pass ascent on the western edge of the desert marked the halfway point of the cross-continental...

Bird Monitoring and Habitat Renewal on the Cocopah Indian Reservation Where Arizona, California and the Republic of Mexico meet, the lower Colorado River transitions into its delta and dries up before finding its way to the Gulf of California as it had done a century ago. It is here that a new habitat restoration effort is taking shape on the Cocopah Indian Tribe’s Reservation— to bring back the native vegetation and wildlife that once thrived along this vital desert waterway. This section of the Colorado River underwent profound changes over the past century due to the dams and diversions that significantly altered the river’s flow. The river no longer spills onto its natural floodplain, soaking the soil and replenishing the groundwater, which has made it easier for invasive vegetation to colonize these areas that once supported a lush mosaic of cottonwood-willow forests, wetlands, mesquite and other native vegetation. Further exacerbating this deterioration, climate change is extending droughts and deepening reductions in the Colorado’s flow. For the Cocopah people with ancestral ties to the Colorado River since time immemorial, these changes have not only impacted the landscape, but also their culture and ability to sustain their traditional ways of life. Recognizing the need to heal both ecosystem and community, the Cocopah...

Could NASA use expandable habitats for its Artemis moon bases? These two companies are betting millions Commercial space infrastructure firm Voyager Technologies is backing lunar habitat developer Max Space with a new multi-million-dollar investment aimed at accelerating development of expandable modules for future missions to the moon. The companies say the partnership will help move expandable habitat technology toward operational missions by scaling up production, bolstering engineering efforts and integrating Voyager's technology systems with Max's habitat infrastructure. "Expanding human presence beyond low Earth orbit (LEO) requires infrastructure that is scalable, resilient and purpose-built for permanence,” Dylan Taylor, chairman and CEO of Voyager, said in a March 9 statement. "By pairing Voyager’s integrated platform with Max Space’s expandable habitat architecture, we are accelerating the transition from demonstration missions to durable lunar capability.” Article continues below Max Space's expandable habitat technology is designed to fold into a tightly packed configuration capable of fitting inside the payload fairings of rockets like SpaceX's Falcon 9. Once delivered to orbit, the moon or another planet, the structure expands to drastically increase its interior living space, offering the dual benefits of lightweight launch mass and greater usable volume than traditional rigid spacecraft. "Voyager’s investment is a powerful validation of our expandable habitat thesis and long heritage in orbit. Together we are building...

New Beginnings for Longleaf: A Habitat Revival in Bertie County, North Carolina In Bertie County, North Carolina, just off the Roanoke River, a 120-acre stand of longleaf pine is quietly thriving. Originally planted in 2010 through the Farm Service Agency’s Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), this former farmland was converted into forest to reduce erosion, improve water quality, and provide habitat for native wildlife. Now, 15 years later, the site is entering a new phase of management. In 2025, a new landowner with a passion for wildlife and outdoor recreation took over the property, aiming to enhance habitat for northern bobwhite quail. Although prescribed fire had already been introduced, results were limited. Seeking guidance, the landowner partnered with Michael Ward, a Fish and Wildlife Biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Together, they developed a management plan that aligns with CRP guidelines and focuses on improving early successional habitat in the understory. The plan includes precommercial thinning in 2027 to open the canopy and promote groundcover diversity, followed by prescribed fire in 2029 to reinforce those benefits. Targeted herbicide applications will help control hardwood encroachment and maintain the open, grassy habitat preferred by quail and other wildlife. Although bobwhite quail...

How Hillary Rosner came to focus on wildlife movement in human habitat Hillary Rosner is an award-winning science journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, National Geographic, Wired, The Atlantic, High Country News, The Washington Post, bioGraphic, and dozens of other publications. She is the assistant director of the Center for Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado Boulder. Rosner grew up in New York City but has called Colorado home for more than 20 years. SunLit: Tell us this book’s backstory – what’s it about and what inspired you to write it? Hillary Rosner: “Roam: Wild Animals and the Race to Repair Our Fractured World” is a journey through our human-engineered planet, to learn about the ways in which all the infrastructure we’ve built to make our lives easier has the opposite effect on most other species that also live here. It looks at the ways in which our cities, roads, fences, industrial-scale farms, and even greenhouse gas emissions serve as barriers to animal movement. And it asks the question, How can we knit the planet back together so that other species can thrive in our midst? It’s about solutions, and people around the world working to reconnect the planet — which is ultimately a hopeful endeavor. I...

Monarch meditation: Butterfly struggles to survive with loss of habitat The monarch butterfly is iconic in North America — but in Montana, it is a rare sight. That’s why when Kathy Ross discovered monarchs breeding in her Bigfork garden last summer, she knew it was extraordinary. “I grew up with monarchs in the Midwest and I’ve lived out here for 37 years — never seen a monarch — but I know historically, they are here, whether they’re few and far between. But I had never heard of documentation of them actually breeding in the Flathead Valley,” Ross told an audience during a Feb. 23 presentation part of the Glacier National Park Volunteer Associates winter speaker series. Ross, a landscaper, conservationist and citizen scientist, initially found eight monarch caterpillars and ended the season with four butterflies taking flight from her garden, adding to a population that has faced severe declines over the decades. To understand why that matters, Glenn Marangelo, development director and co-founder of the Missoula Butterfly House and Insectarium, walked the audience through the monarch’s remarkable lifecycle. A MONARCH’S life begins with a single egg laid on one plant — milkweed. Each egg is laid individually on the underside of a milkweed leaf. In five to 10 days, a...
