Habitat Loss Is Eroding Tribal Sovereignty Spanning seven U.S. states and one Canadian province, the Columbia River Basin was once the largest salmon-producing river system in the world. Yet, with four of the 16 salmon and steelhead trout species now extinct and another seven endangered or threatened, its future remains imperilled. Though a federal judge recently ordered water levels be reduced at dams along the Columbia and Snake rivers to aid salmon migration upstream, he described a “disappointing history of government avoidance and manipulation instead of sincere efforts at solving the problem” in his February ruling. Such federal and state failures to protect salmon habitats are rendering Indigenous fishing rights in western Washington meaningless, warned a report released in February by the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission (NWIFC). Over the past 100 years, the amount of healthy natural habitat in England has shrunk: 99.7% of fens, 97% of species‑rich grasslands, 80% of lowland heathlands, up to 70% of ancient woodlands and up to 85% of saltmarshes have been lost. Attempting to restore natural habitats while trashing those we have left is akin to building a house while simultaneously robbing the foundations. Mr Dumitriu also claims that legal protections for nature “block the green building we desperately need”. New Beginnings for Longleaf: A Habitat Revival in Bertie County, North Carolina In Bertie County, North Carolina, just off the Roanoke River, a 120-acre stand of longleaf pine is quietly thriving. Originally planted in 2010 through the Farm Service Agency’s Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), this former farmland was converted into forest to reduce erosion, improve water quality, and provide habitat for native wildlife. Now, 15 years later, the site is entering a new phase of management. In 2025, a new landowner with a passion for wildlife and outdoor recreation took over the property, aiming to enhance habitat for northern bobwhite quail. Although prescribed fire had already been introduced, results were limited. Seeking guidance, the landowner partnered with Michael Ward, a Fish and Wildlife Biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Together, they developed a management plan that aligns with CRP guidelines and focuses on improving early successional habitat in the understory. The plan includes precommercial thinning in 2027 to open the canopy and promote groundcover diversity, followed by prescribed fire in 2029 to reinforce those benefits.
