Looking back at all the fab things I've done this year, and I've got to say, casting my own #BronzeAge #handaxe at the Great Orme Mines, where most of the ancient world's copper came from was such a thrill. With a celebratory beer after, naturally... Thanks so much to James Dilley at Ancient Craft
The first article from my PhD results is now published — and it’s Open Access!

#handaxe (or handaxe or Acheulean hand axe) is a prehistoric stone tool with two faces that is the longest-used tool in human history.[1] It is made from stone, usually flint or chert that has been "reduced" and shaped from a larger piece by knapping, or hitting against another

Finally got round to finishing this drawing of a 300,000 year old #handaxe from Stoke Newington, London, found by S.H. Warren in 1894. Now this little-un, along with others from Stoke Newington that I've drawn, lives at the British Museum
Little work in progress of a lovely Lower Palaeolithic (c.300,000 years old) #handaxe from Stoke Newington, London.

A well used and worn ferrous dolomite Palaeolithic handaxe. It is 9cms by 5.5cms at it's broadest. It displays a lot of wear on the eft chopping/cleaving edge. This handaxe was clearly a very trusted and effective tool.

By way of an intro, I'm a #Palaeolithic #archaeologist at Durham working on social traditions in #Acheulean #handaxe manufacture.
grey lump of rock, the top section has brown sections. Its a front, side and rear view of the object
#Finds This object is a Palaeolithic [or Old Stone Age] handaxe. We think it is between 500,000 and 40,000 years old. Its maker was most likely a beetle-browed Neanderthal, an ancestral cousin of our lot.
