Le Château Charybdis-en-Lethe What ancient visage o'er this place does watch, And watching, bides its time, to wait a while, "Til once again, through rotting, gabled arch A morsel comes. And then there glints a smile A hungry, spiteful look, a dreadful wile — As victim falls down ever deeper still. Has Zion in its wisdom set this trial? Can she who wanders ever set her will Against the terror waiting in the darkness' chill? What unpretentious frame about its door, And Lo! its shutters such a subtle shade. Its name is washed from Hist'ry's farthest shore, Its garden lawn a sea through which to wade Of grasses tall, of verdant weeds cascade. And o'er it all an awful silence lies, Which slices deep as Siegfried's fabled blade Through quarry's mind to cut off any cries. And deeper yet in labyrinthine halls she hies. The Harvest will begin in chasms lost To Clio's scroll. But never in return Can such a feast as she repay the cost Of subtle Majiks it did seek to learn From demon's fiery breath: a life eterne. Oppressive, dark, and evil in its lack Of any soul not set for Hel to burn. And though its edifice stays silent black, Thus does the awful firmament decay and crack. And silence falls again where silence reigns: A house in solitude, aware, unmoored From anywhere. Within, no sound remains, Though once, perhaps, were feet upon these boards, Now only apathy of beast abhorred, Esurience and deathly, creeping fear. This edifice, decaying and ignored, Would tell a gruesome tale where sin inheres, But even echoes are forgotten ever here.
I think I finally finished the poem that I’ve been thinking on and working on for the past year. I’m feeling nice about this one. Constructive feedback always welcome!
