“You’ve got me as your human!” was what this lovely man said when I asked if they would be projecting Dear New York photos on the walls.

“For the first time in history, all of Grand Central is completely cleared of advertising, as 150 digital screens traditionally devoted to a mix of commercial advertising and public service announcements become part of an immersive experience showcasing the diversity and humanity of New York.”

“New York is humanity itself. Every type of person is
here: every culture, every religion, every viewpoint.
And all of us crowded onto the same narrow
sidewalks, the same one-way streets, the same
subway cars. With all of these differences packed
into so small a place, it's a miracle that this city
works. Yet somehow, despite the honking, the
screaming, the shoving, the cursing; we make it
work. Sometimes we annoy the hell out of each
other. But we also show up for each other. We take
care of each other. In these troubled times, when
the world seems to be teetering on edge, New York
is still something to celebrate. Humanity is still
something to celebrate.

Dear New York is my attempt to showcase this city
the only way I know how-through its people. And
what better canvas than the place where all of New
York comes together, Grand Central. It was a job
too large for one person. At many points it did not
seem possible. But every time I reached a dead
end, people showed up to help. People who wanted
to create something beautiful. People who
believed. People who were skeptical, but came
along for the ride anyway. In the end more than one
thousand people contributed to this work. All of
them helped to create Dear New York. All of them
are part of Dear New York. And now, by being here,
so are you.”

Stephanie “Tanqueray” Johnson smiling, wearing an animal print coat and hat, along with big, gold, hoop earrings.

We’ve lost a legend. Stephanie ‘Tanqueray’ Johnson passed away last night after suffering a severe stroke. She will be most remembered for holding the world in thrall with her no-holds-barred storytelling about life as a burlesque dancer in the 1970’s. Stephanie was a complicated person. Her public persona was irresistibly charismatic. Yet behind the scenes I’ve rarely met somebody who had such difficulty with close relationships. She was internationally adored, yet intensely lonely. She was desirous of companionship, yet quick to cut people out of her life over the smallest slights. Stephanie told me endless stories about how badly her mother treated her as a child, yet remained capable of exhibiting that same behavior toward others. People are complicated. And the longer you live, the more you realize the most inexcusable behavior often stems from the saddest traumas. There was always a little girl inside of Stephanie who never had a chance to feel safe. A little girl who learned at a young age that the best way to keep from getting hurt was to throw the first punch. But this little girl also had such a love of life. And despite her X-rated stories, and her sharp edges, was capable of such innocence. Stephanie slept with a teddy bear until the day she died. She’d melt in the presence of animals and babies. And until the very end, she laughed like a little girl. In the final weeks of her life all the hard edges melted away. All the defense mechanisms, the learned responses. She reverted back to the little girl she’d been before she’d gotten hurt. And that is the Stephanie that is smiling down on us right now. In her own words: ‘When I get to heaven I hope God shows me a movie of my life. But just the funny parts. Not the in-between parts, cause then we’d both start crying. Underneath all the laughs and the gags, it was always about one thing: survival.

I got a (flawless) used copy of this book last weekend for the bargain price of $5. I've always been a HUGE fan (& devout reader) of #HumansOfNewYork because, well, humans have always fascinated me on many, many levels.
I've found the 1st of what I'm sure will be many of my faves. She rocks! LOL
