Bonus sterile flower post: Here are a few more Hydrangea species that have large sterile and small fertile flowers.
1. H. quercifolia
2. H. aspera
3. H. involucrata 'Wim Rutten'

Hydrangea macrophylla also has “lacecap” cultivars. In these, like this 'Frau Reiko', the inflorescence is flatter, & the sterile flowers are limited to the periphery of the inflorescence. Fertile flowers are a small but significant part of the display. #Hydrangeaceae #pollination #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

We see nothing but sterile flowers in the “mophead” Hydrangea macrophylla. There are fertile flowers, but they’re small and hidden under the large, sterile flowers. This is ‘Endless Summer’. #Hydrangeaceae #pollination #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

I’ve posted about showy bracts that add to a floral display, but this week, I’m posting on sterile flowers that add to the display. No plant does it better than Hydrangea arborescens. What we see are sterile flowers. The fertile flowers are small & hidden. #Hydrangeaceae #pollination #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Many temperate plants were described as “perulate” meaning that the overwintering buds are covered by bud scales (nowadays rarely called perulae). You can see the brown bud scales here on this shoot of Hydrangea quercifolia. They are just modified leaves. #Hydrangeaceae #bracts #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Hydrangea aspera Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don (Hydrangeaceae) is a shrub indigenous to the mesic areas in Asia. In their study, Schenk et al. determined that Hydrangeaceae underwent three significant shifts toward increased diversification rates, although H. aspera was not part of the radiations. A similar pattern of three significant shifts toward increased diversification rates were also identified in Loasaceae. Although an ecological transition accompanied by a speciation rate increase was noted in a clade of Philadelphus (Hydrangeaceae), and a biogeographic transition occurred with an increased speciation shift in a clade of Deutzia (Hydrangeaceae), the only clade that exhibits a phylogenetic pattern consistent with ecological opportunity was Mentzelia section Bartonia (Loasaceae), which diversified in Mesoamerica where the two families originated. Has anyone else noticed a spicy fragrance from aging Hydrangea macrophylla inflorescences like these? There is no aroma from the flowers at anthesis, but aging inflorescences seem to have a faint, fleeting fragrance… unless my nose is hallucinating. #Hydrangeaceae #Hydrangea #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
