The blueberry flowering season is almost OVER! 💮

Bees are making the most of the last open flowers 🐝

Blooming was unusually SHORT — leaving very little time for pollination... Will it be enough for a good fruit set? 🫐

Results in a few weeks. Stay tuned!

Conceptual diagram of touch-sensitive stigma movements in Mazus miquelii. Higher temperatures accelerate both temporary closure and reopening. whereas permanent (irreversible) closure tracks pollination progress: greater pollen deposition and faster pollen-tube growth accelerate permanent closure, while pollen-tube position is positively associated with the time to permanent closure. Pollen source shows no detectable effect.

The blueberry bushes are still flowering!

Bees are busy buzz-pollinating the flowers.

Curious to see how this will translate into fruit set this season...

Why This Plant Drops Its Fruit Full of Beetle Babies What looks like a plant’s failed fruit may actually be a clever deal that lets both the plant and its pollinating beetles survive.

"Japanese red elder plants protect their own survival by dropping fruits with Heterhelus beetle larvae, allowing their survival too. This interaction changes how scientists understand the balance between plants and their pollinating insects."

Walking through the blueberry fields today — The bushes are FINALLY in bloom! 🌼 — The bees are buzzing everywhere 🐝 — It's incredible to see.

Flowering is incredibly LATE this year... a consequence of truly bizarre weather!

Why plants may bloom earlier: Tiny dew droplets are triggering early flowering in plants Plants around the world are flowering earlier in the year, a trend attributed to climate change. But there could be another hitherto hidden trigger. Scientists led by researchers at the Chinese Academ...

seven photos of bright flowering vegetable and fruit plants and one with a bumble bee collecting pollen

Bees are great at spotting bright flowers especially yellow because their vision is adapted to UV light, which makes yellow hues stand out vividly. This helps them find nectar-rich blooms efficiently, boosting pollination & keeping our ecosystems thriving. 🌼🐝 #Bees #Pollination

Graphical Abstract: A 4-year survey of Cremastra appendiculata var. variabilis pollinators was conducted using a commercially available sensor camera throughout the flowering period. Additionally, sensor cameras and interval photography were used simultaneously to compare the number of videos capturing bumblebees. The results showed that using a commercially available sensor camera effectively captures flower-visiting bumblebees, with only a small proportion of visits potentially missed.

🔍 To obtain an accurate estimate, we’ll repeat these counts several times during flowering!

Fruit set — the % of flowers that produce fruit — is a key indicator of pollination quality 🐝➡️🌼➡️🫐
But how do we measure it?

Step 1: select and mark branches for monitoring.
One branch per bush, with at least 30 buds!

Red flowers have a ‘magic trait’ to attract birds and keep bees away Birds and bees see the world in different ways – and some flowers have evolved to take advantage of the gap in their perspectives.

"For flowering plants, reproduction is a question of birds and bees, and attracting the right pollinator can be a matter of survival. New research shows how flowers do it, and might even involve a little bit of magic."
