Do you know what Sneckdowns are?
They are the cheapest traffic consultants in the world.
Sneckdowns are one of the most powerful (and free) urban planning tools in the world. When it snows, nature performs a perfect traffic analysis. The snow that stays on the asphalt shows us exactly which parts of the road cars don't actually use.
It reveals the "dead space."
Why does this matter?
Wider sidewalks: That pile of snow is space where people could be walking.
Ty Shorter crossings: It shows us where we can extend the curb to make crossing the street safer for children and the elderly.
Of Slower speeds: It proves that lanes are often much wider than necessary, encouraging cars to drive faster than they should.
We spend millions on consultants and sensors to decide how to redesign our streets. Sometimes, we just need to wait for a snowstorm and take a photo.
The snow doesn't lie: our streets have plenty of space, and we gave it to cars by mistake. Let's use the winter to see where we can give it back to people.
Clarence Eckerson Jr. has been documenting Sneckdowns for years. Read the article in the comments.

The #sneckdown is now a phenomenon, with nature's traffic-calming gaining international media coverage and photos
popping up from across the U.S. and Canada.
"The snow is almost like nature's tracing paper," Streetfilms' Clarence Eckerson told the BBC. "It's free. You don't have to do a crazy expensive traffic calming study. It provides a visual cue into how people behave."
