The day that I met Izzy I was contemplating hanging up the cameras. Ohhhh, not totally, perhaps, but really wrestling with the demons and gargoyles of censorship, repression, misogyny and fascism. Do we contribute to simplification or are we lifting up the strength and beauty of women in a way that offers alternatives to the dominant paradigm? Can I -- as an older white guy -- find my way to opposing the stereotypes that I grew up with? Or did I? In the last decade, I've pursued model photography as an answer on multiple levels. It's been therapy for me on a personal level and allowed me to explore my relationships with women, it's confirmed for me that friendships with women are a vital part of my daily life. I had never had much of a NEED to consider power dynamics and roles and this has been an opportunity to really dig into those topics, which I think has enriched me as a human. Photography has brought together my deep love of random road trips and poking around on back roads, cooking for others and waking up on my cot to some kind of amazing vista. And I swear it feels like every single one of these passions is under attack by this so-called "Administration". The public lands of the desert West that I have come to know and love over the past 50 years are under threat in ways that are difficult to wrap our heads around. Once privatized, once despoiled, there is no return. We will have robbed our grandchildren and their heirs of an inheritance that has been protected for the last century. Our stubborn refusal to admit our dependence on immigrants as part of our industrial structure both lessens our vibrance as a nation and is a shameful act of brutality towards our fellows. Whether we are planning to institute full-on slave labor via the private prison industry or somehow rapidly roboticize the ag industry, we are crossing moral boundaries that threaten our food supply and will weaken us as a nation. We devalue human beings. Art saves lives.
