This photo shows Ukrainian- American actor Jack Palance (1919 – 2006) preparing for his role as boxer Harlan "Mountain" McClintock in the 1956 television drama “Requiem for a Heavyweight.” Palance began his 50-year acting career as a professional boxer under the name Jack Brazzo before becoming an actor. He later won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “City Slickers” in 1991. Palance, the son of Ukrainian immigrants, was invited to a 2004 Russian Film Festival in Hollywood where he was told that Vladimir Putin had honored him with the title the “People’s Artist.” Palance refused the title saying, “I have nothing to do with Russia or Russian film. My parents were born in Ukraine. I’m Ukrainian. I’m not Russian. So excuse me, but I don’t belong here. It’s best if we leave.” He walked out of the festival.
