Barbara McClintock (1902-1992) was an American cytogeneticist. Her discovery in the 1940s and '50s of mobile genetic elements (jumping genes) was ahead of its time and for many years was ignored or disregarded by her fellow scientists. Deeply disappointed, she stopped publishing and ceased giving lectures, though she continued doing research. Not until the late 1960s and '70s, after biologists had determined that the genetic material was DNA, did members of the scientific community begin to verify her early findings. When recognition finally came, McClintock was inundated with awards and honours, most notably the 1983 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. She was the first woman to be the sole winner of this award.

Structure of the Activator (Ac) transposon. The 4.6-kb transposon has a single transcription unit with 5 exons, encoding its transposase. The termini are 11-bp inverted repeats, adjacent to which are subterminal repetitive regions containing many copies of sequences homologous or identical to the hexamer AAACGG in both orientations.
Subsequently she found that another locus, which could autonomously transpose, Activator (Ac), was necessary for DS to jump. But it was not the identification of these two #JumpingGenes that were revolutionary for the field, but rather the correct(!) conclusions McClintock drew.
Looking for active transposable elements in the wheat genome is now totally possible π π€
