Presented by France to the United States as a symbol of friendship and their alliance during the American Revolution, it was shipped in 350 individual pieces and packed in over 200 crates. Reassembled over the following year, the statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886, and stands for freedom, democracy, and hope.
The statue was conceived by French political thinker Édouard de Laboulaye and designed by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi.
