It is well documented that young disabled people are much more likely to experience sexual abuse than their non-disabled peers & less likely to disclose their experiences of sexual violence
But there are gaps in the evidence base & young people with complex needs are under-represented in research
Barriers to coming forward
Fear of not being believed
Not having the right words to explain what happened
Being treated like children
Not being considered a credible witness
Isolation or limited support networks
Lack of sex education
Helping someone with a learning disability talk about sexual violence.
Be patient let them talk at their own pace.
Listen don’t interrupt or look distracted
Believe - trust the info you are being given & say you believe them
Support - support them to make choices about what they want to do next.
Young disabled people face a higher risk of sexual violence and often encounter barriers to disclosure, such as not being believed or lacking the words to explain.
It’s essential to listen carefully, believe their experiences, and support their decisions.
