A close-up photo of a cluster of three pale pink, nearly white flowers growing from dry, lichen-covered soil. Several other flower buds are visible, but there are no visible leaves.

Lewisia rediviva (bitterroot) is a beautiful dryland flower that is known for regenerating from seemingly dead and dry roots. It's a lovely pop of colour on the Okanagan hills.

Two large, pale pink flowers with over a dozen blade-like petals grow out of rocky ground with otherwise sparse vegetation. Several other flowers are budding, and no obvious leaves are prominent.

Bitterroot (Lewisia rediviva) is a charming little plant with unusual tubular leaves and large showy flowers that was in full bloom across the Okanagan in May.

A lewisia in a hole in my rockery wall. The snails ate the rest of the flowerbuds.

The planters at the front door needed perking up, so I visited one of the local nurseries and got some lovely plants for colour.

Lewisia cotyledon, cliffmaids, a Northern California flower that extends into southern Oregon, favoring rocky lower mountain habitat.

Half are evergreen and with a thick taproot (that was harvested and eaten by Native Americans) from which the fleshy rosette leaves emerge and then flowers from spring into summer, in shades from pale pink to tropical sunset. The other half with the same habit but deciduous.

A Royal Horticultural Society AGM winner, worth a try if you have a rock garden in zone 6 of above, and happy in a pot but give her roots room. Named for Merriweather Lewis (of Lewis and Clark).
