13/14 The findings provide one of the most compelling arguments yet for the Mars Sample Return mission.

Studying the Sapphire Canyon sample in advanced labs on Earth is the only way to determine the origin of the organics and minerals it contains.

Four maps showing 2 potential sites for a rover and sample return mission, from different study groups in 1988 and 1989. The top example (context at left, detail at right with a landing site and rover traverses) is in cratered highlands modified by water flow. The bottom example is at the edge of the north polar cap.

Ron Greeley to the rescue tomorrow, but first a couple more rover sites. A site in Iapygia was presented at the 11th meeting of the MRSR group in February 1989 (top 2 maps here), with a rover and 3 traverses. Ideas like this are found in meeting minutes but […]

The Mars Rover Sample Return (MRSR) study had a science Working Group who met repeatedly in 1987-1989. They considered sites in the 5th meeting in January 1988 and the 8th meeting in September 1988. This map shows the sites they were thinking about. There […]

Four sites on Mars are mapped here, all sample return sites. In the top row are 2 maps, context and detail, showing Olympus Mons: the plains and the scarp around the mountain are sampled by a rover. Below that, 2 maps of an area at Lucus Planum show a site where plains, highlands, a channel and the 'planum' (plateau) (maybe part of a large belt of pyroclastic deposits) can be sampled. A single map below them shows an area in the great canyon system, Valles Marineris, with two landing sites but no rover routes. The last pair of maps are from Agustin Chicarro of ESA: a rover would land in plains and sample crater ejecta and a linear ridge.

3 more sites from the same study, and one from ESA. Maps A and B show Olympus Mons: the plains and the scarp around the mountain are sampled. Maps C and D at Lucus Planum show a site where plains, highlands, a channel and the 'planum' (plateau) itself can be […]

Consider the top map in the previous post. The landing site is on smooth plains near the lowland-highland boundary. A long traverse into the plains samples different kinds of material, perhaps including lava flows. Another traverse samples crater ejecta - stuff dug up from under the surface. The […]

Six maps show 3 sites for sample return mapped by the US Geological Survey. Each site has a context map and a closeup with a rover traverse plan. The rovers would sample several rock types at each site. Top: plains and channel deposits at south Amazonis. Middle: highlands and possible pyroclastic deposits at Eumenides Dorsum. Bottom: channel deposits and plateau materials in Kasei Valles.

Let's look at some of these sample return sites. These are from the USGS studies. They made geological maps of several sites and showed how a rover could sample multiple rock types at each site. The top map includes plains and channel deposits at south […]

This map shows Mars in 2 hemispheres with another set of sample return sites on it. One set by C. Markun shows sites with suggested rock types. The other set if from a study by the European Space Agency. There is considerable similarity between this map and the previous one as researchers converged on sites of interest.

Here is another map of sites from 1988 and 1990. The 1988 set by C. Markun tried something new. Geomorphology drove site selection but could we speculate about rock types? Conglomerates, shale, sandstone etc. Those sites targeted specific rock types. The […]

A map of Mars in 2 hemispheres showing sites considered for sample return in studies from 1987 and 1988. There was no composition data of the type which draws modern missions to Meridiani, Gale or Jezero, so sites are chosen based on appearance - channels, plains, volcanic areas.

Sample return was studied again and again in the 1980s and 1990s. This map shows sites from a workshop in November 1987. USGS studied 10 sites and published maps of most, some with rover traverses on them (Masursky sites in this map). Two other lists of sites […]

Those Viking 1 maps are only about 20 m across, and are made from a reprojected surface panorama. A rover could collect rocks imaged by Viking 1 or follow up on its discoveries. The dots in map E were not explained, just schematic potential targets. One problem with this - at that period it […]

Several Mars 1984 sample return sites are shown on 5 maps. At top left a landing ellipse gives access to younger volcanic deposits near Apollinaris Mons (near the Spirit rover site). At top right very ancient crust would be sampled west of Schiaparelli crater. Rocky areas considered most suitable for sampling are shown in white in the middle map, with a few other suggested landing sites. Two maps at the bottom show the Viking 1 landing site, which could be visited by a rover to collect rocks seen by Viking or to follow up on earlier observations.

In the central map in the previous post, a regional map shows sampling targets for young volcanic rocks in the Tharsis and Elysium regions. One of those sites, Arsia Mons West, had fresh-looking flows which could be sampled in two ellipses. Map E at bottom right shows a landing ellipse around […]

Sites for potential Mars sample return missions are shown in 5 maps. At top, a context map (left) shows 2 landing sites near the north pole. One is enlarged (right) showing 5 points of interest. The one numbered 4 was preferred. In the middle, a regional map shows volcanic sampling targets in the Tharsis and Elysium regions. At bottom left, lava flows west of Arsia Mons could be sampled in two ellipses. At bottom right a landing ellipse is shown around he best guess for the location of Viking Lander 1. Samples would help interpret the Viking results.

One Mars 1984 variant had been for a rover to collect samples for later collection, like Perseverance. A 1980 report to the Mars Science Working Group looked at sites for sample return, shown in this map and others to follow (NOT in rank order).

Two landing […]

Trump Budget Calls for Stranding NASA’s Mars Samples on the Red Planet After billions of dollars in spending and decades of planning, NASA may be forced to abandon precious samples of air, rock and soil on the Martian surface. Experts are furious

When NASA's samples become alien artifacts and humans become the ancient ones who left their tubes in the sand. Cost of retrieval: $8B. Cost of irony: priceless. #MarsSampleReturn becomes #MarsSampleAbandoned
