The museum housing the remains of the #MaryRose is really well laid out, so many artefacts found and displayed, child was really interested in it, and there’s so much to see and experience, we need a return visit on their annual pass now!!

Then we went to see the fave (500-year old) ship of #KingHenryVIII, the #MaryRose at @maryrosemuseum.bsky.social within the #HistoricDockyards of #Portsmouth, with their excellent displays & guides on site. When I last saw this, it had been only a couple of years since it had been lifted from sea!

I'm - erm - not exactly local. But one day I'd love to visit. I was nearly late to work the day they lifted the #MaryRose!

One of the officers on board the Mary Rose owned a pewter chamber pot, presumably because he didn't want to make his way to the heads when nature called.
Though looking at the state of it, you have to wonder what he was drinking!

Two wrought-iron swivel gun barrels, mounted on reconstructed stocks. They have been dated to the 15th century, and were found in the Lagoon at Venice. The handle on the nearest gun is attached to the detachable breech chamber, which contained the powder charge. Guns like these normally fired stone or lead roundshot, or sometimes mixtures of metal fragments and stone, and were intended for use against the crews of enemy ships. The shot was loaded at the back of the barrel, before the breech chamber was put in place and secured with a rope binding.

Glad to help! The bases probably looked a bit like these wrought-iron (15th cent) Venetian examples, or those from the #MaryRose. The word 'foist' came from the Italian 'fusta' (light galley), which had apparently come into English by 1485.

For years dreamt of overlooking site where Mary Rose was raised. Past attempts to visit Southsea Castle timed badly. Yesterday stars aligned, got my moment. Coincidentally on anniversary witnessing the warship coming up on BBC tv as a child.

🌊#OTD in #History 11 October 1982, the sunken Tudor ship the #MaryRose was raised from the seabed through a major maritime salvage project orchestrated by the #MaryRoseTrust. The ship and its artefacts are a fascinating time capsule that can be seen at the #MaryRoseMuseum.

A linstock being carved out of a branch of Autumn Olive. The end is carved like a dragon, and is used to hold a piece of burning slow match when firing artillery of the 16th century.

The heat has finally relented, and it’s been pleasant enough for some porch whittling. It’s been a while, so I just wanted a practice piece to get back in the rhythm. This will eventually be a linstock, a tool used to hold a burning slow match for setting off artillery. #woodcarving #maryrose

#OTD 13 June 1514

The Great Harry was launched part of #HenryVIII's 'Army by sea'

Skirmishes with the French effectively ended on 14 June (coincidence?) so the fleet was decommissioned

The ship saw little action until the Battle of the Solent when the #MaryRose sank
