a photo from Max Discord general section where I freely share my latest findings on waveforms. #maxmsp #sebairstein
Hi, after a debate about AI in the Max Discord server, I felt the need to share my latest experience, the creative use of the gen mix object. I also want to point out that a little aliasing can be to my liking when it's used judiciously and in moderation. #sebairstein #maxmsp @cycling74.bsky.social
Btw… If you use #MaxMSP (@cycling74.bsky.social) in your life, it really would make sense for you to use my snippets package: ste.snips. Freshly updated to v.0.0.7… just saying…

Hey, I wanted to share these pictures with you. Because honestly, what's sexier than a wave shape with curves, whether generous or sharp? And yes, no AI here, they're not yet at my level of stupidity. #sebairstein #maxmsp #waveform

Okay, it takes time to do these things, but in the end there's this satisfaction, this moment #happypatching and now I'm going to get up and dance a little to celebrate. And think about what's next. The first goal was to visualize 64 waveforms. But I haven't thought about the sound yet. #maxmsp
Documentation for the message `scan` sent to a [vst~] object: Re-scan the system VST folders for new plug-ins. On the Macintosh this is generally /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/VST/ and on windows this is the folder specified in the VSTPluginsPath string value under the registry key HKLM\Software\VST. On Mac OS, Audio Unit plug-ins will be scanned and .auinfo files for Apple built-in and user-installed plug-ins will be added to the search path. The optional arguments 0, 1, 2, or 3, set the scan type to 0=default, 1=partial, 2=full, and 3=reset. Arguments: scan type [int]
maybe only useful to plugin devs, but [vst~] can trigger a rescan of your plugin directories. I can never remember where to find that in settings. #maxmsp
I am experimenting with a 7.83 Hz waveform with a deviation of 0.1618 Hz in stereo and my little cat Billie, intrigued, places herself in the middle of the 2 speakers. I love playing Doctor Frankestein, er, Doctor #sebairstein #maxmsp #7,83hz #cats #waveform #iwanttobelieve #soundmedicine
Here I wanted to study mathematical curves, but I forgot the power of the mix and interp objects of gen, which have become a real playground for experimenting with more complex mixtures when using lines more sophisticated than a triangle.

needlessly convoluted max/msp patch
I just did this convoluted [umenu] thing before reading the help patcher to discover that the `symbol foo` message does basically the same thing. Could still be a useful pattern if you need to do some esoteric string or regex stuff though #maxmsp

a guitar pedal, the MOD Dwarf. It has three foot switches, three push buttons, and three encoders as controls. It has an LCD screen comparable to an original Game Boy's resolution. Stereo in and out, USB, TRS MIDI in/out, and some kind of ethernet-ish jack for MOD's Control Chain protocol.
oh dang you can put #maxmsp gen~ patches on this guitar pedal

'Who's Afraid of Blue Notes' a digital music experience controlled by a midi keyboard. Designed to be accessible to those who have no musical experience. Made with Unreal Engine and Max/MSP

Been messing with design programs for decades, to eke a living dictionary for synaesthetics - sound mapped to #fractal parameters with #maxmsp / #jitter, #Apophysis and #Chaotica. Lately #TiltBrush @openbrush.app are steadying me, stress balls relieved swollen knuckles.
Time to make stuff.
While I prefer to bring my own text editor, the dedicated Frescobaldi editor is useful to play MIDI output into a virtual bus, and send that to Max to host some VSTs and my MIDI keyboard performance patch.

A desktop screenshot. Neovim is open in Ghostty on the left, with a split window showing two Lilypond text documents. On the right is the beginnings of a PDF score, titled “Forget your name,“ with oboe, clarinet, and MIDI keyboard.
Finally taking the plunge and learning Lilypond! It's kind of like LaTeX for sheet music.
I'd been interested since the Finale debacle, and while Dorico has been nice, I'm finding that in many cases I prefer writing text files to working in a graphical program […]
