A glacial erratic pebble - this could be classified as a sillimanite gneiss. It is greenish-grey in colour, with white and blue-green crystals with co-aligned fabric orientation.
A close-up photo of the specimen, showing details of crystalline fabric - green acicular crystals of sillimanite interspersed with quartz and weathered feldspar crystals. There is a distinct co-alignment in the crystalline fabric. Magnified c.15x with f.o.v. circa 1cm.
Close up view of specimen, showing green acicular crystals of sillimanite set in pale matrix of [quartz] and [feldspar] and reddish brown garnet crystals, perhaps almandine. Magnified 40x with f.o.v. circa 5mm.
The geological equivalent of an ornithological 'LBJ', this 'little grey job' glacial erratic w tiny garnets and 1000s of co-aligned sillimanite crystals, was found in a Suffolk field.
Originates somewhere up north, perhaps Glen Clova.
