A uniquely eroded stone with a ridged texture along its sides stands in focus among a pile of other rocks. In the background a river flows past in soft-focus. The highlights reflecting off of the water run in the same direction and echo the texture of the erosion marks on the stone.

The colours of the rocks are a range of dusty blue-greys and light purple, red tones. The effect of the overall image is a soft, gentle portrait of a stone and the water that eroded it.

Documenting the idea of time made visible has been an ongoing project, and I love the tonality & grain of these geologic details caught on film.

“FROM MY POV” Rocher Percé (Percé Rock) one of the most iconic and beautiful places on the #Gaspé Peninsula in #Quebec. This #horizontal monolith is one of the world’s largest natural arches over water. Awe inspiring to behold. 🇨🇦

Mantle plume–driven uplift accelerated erosion and carbonate weathering, temporarily creating a powerful carbon sink that may have outpaced volcanic degassing from the CO₂-poor Emeishan basalts.

A new perspective on deep Earth–climate interactions!🤔

Could the Tyrannosaurus rex have evolved into giants far earlier than previously believed? A 74-million-year-old shin bone found in New Mexico may have belonged to a relative of the ferocious predators. “It's a dead ringer for T. rex,” Dr. Nicholas Longrich of the University of Bath said. Read […]

#FossilFriday these Tiltoniceras (?) #Ammonites from Runswick Bay North Yorkshire, UK. There are layers of these several ammos deep, and many m2 in area in the black shales. My personal take is that they represent the maximum flooding surface and formed via condensation. #geology #paleontology

My next #Geology Of The #NationalParks Through Pictures is for Wind Cave NP. Wind Cave is both one of the oldest caves in the planet, at over 300 million years old, and is one of the only places you can see boxwork formations.

An ichnofossil: Ordovician trilobite trackways, preserved as locomotion traces on the ancient sea floor.
Unlike body fossils, these are trace fossils recording behavior rather than anatomy.

An exceptionally well-preserved Ordovician trilobite I came across this week.
Not my find this time — but the level of detail is incredible, with the thoracic segments and cephalon almost perfectly intact.
