A photo of two moths mating. The female which is seen from the side is bright orange. The male seen from above is darker red, his body covered in rust red fur-like scales, his wings darker, but with a white spot on the forewing and a transparent "window" also on the forewing.

I conclude this year's #Mothmas with this lovely photo of two Southern Pink-striped Oakworm Moths ( Anisota pellucida ) mating. These are very common moths here in South Georgia and their caterpillars greatly enjoy nomming on my Water Oak tree 😁

A focus stacked photo of the front of a brown moth from the front. The moth's slender legs are tan with dark brown bands. Large round dark eyes are on either side of its narrow tan head. The brown wings stretch to either side of the frame. Above the head and wings there is a ruffled crest of tan and darker brown scales.

I was really happy with how this #FocusStack of the Lunate Zale, Zale lunata, came out.

This fun #Moth with it's abdomen curved so far forward that it is amost touching its head, is in the genus Eulithis.

This pretty #moth is known as the The Bad-wing Moth,
Dyspteris abortivaria. It gets this name as the shape of the wings makes it hard for entomologists to mount and they were not amused πŸ˜‚

A photo of a brown and tan moth from the front as it rests on light blue painted wood. The moth's head, legs, and body are covered in fur-like tan hairs. its slender antennae are swept backwards away from the head, it's dark eyes almost lost in shadow. its triangular wings are outstretched and angled downwards, the rear of the wings higher than the front and they are tan with some brown spots close to the root. Another fun #moth, the Spotted Apatelodes Moth, Apatelodes torrefacta. This moth reminds me of how I envisioned the ornithopters from Dune before Denis Villeneuve went and modeled them after dragonflies πŸ˜‚

A photo of two very different looking moths as they rest next to each other on pale blue siding. The moth on the right is dart shaped, its wings held close together. It is creamy white with dark brown markings. The moth on the left is has a slender body that is orange at the head and upper body, becoming darkly iridescent lower down before the orange returns in a fan shaped poof at the end of the moth's abdomen. The wings are slender and held apart from the body and are darkly iridescent.

A photo of a pale lime green Luna Moth resting on a white sheet. The moth has feathery brown antennae which indicates that this is a male. It has brown legs and a brown stripe along the leading edge of its forewings. The wings are a light shade of lime green which is indicative of a late season flight (This one was observed in late August.) earlier flights are a darker more intense green. There are 2 small yellow eyespots on the forewings in the front median area. The rear wings have long swallow-like "tails" and slightly larger yellow eyespots in the middle.

A photo of the front of a large brown moth from the front. The moths has large brown legs covered in fur-like hairs. The head is small and lacks mouth parts as silk moths do not eat as adults, only flying to mate, large dark eyes are just under the very large feathery tan antennae which indicate that this is a male (The antennae help him locate the female's pheromones.). The large wings are held at an obtuse angle behind it.

The hindwings are tan at the trailing edges, with a dark band a 4th of the way up, and large dark black and yellow eye-spots just forward of the median.

A close up of the black and yellow eyespot. The eyespot is yellow at the lower right with a clear area in the middle. White scales extend upwards fading to black. There is some thought that these eyespots closely resemble the eyes of Great Horned Owls which greatly aids in their defensive potential.
