A Yamama 465 "IT" dirtbike with the clutch sidecover removed. The clutch basket has dimples worn into it
A close-up of the engine of a Yamaha 465 "IT" two-stroke dirtbike. This engine is incredibly simple, it has no valves, just a piston and some shapes make it work. A carburetor provides the atomized gasoline mist. Though a simple, entirely mechanical machine, it still needs electricity to run and therefore has an alternator
A Yamaha 465 "IT" dirtbike. Didn't come with a kickstand
Sidecover Sunday:
This '81 Yamaha 465 IT had a clutch that wasn't disengaging. A fairly common problem caused by the friction plates wearing dimples into the clutch basket preventing them from sliding apart when the clutch is pulled in.

The left sidecover removed off the engine of a Yamaha XS1100 "Midnight Special" exposing an electromechanical timing device for timing the engine's spark. It includes a vacuum diaphragm connected to the intake boot of the 1st cylinder.
Both left sidecovers removed off another Yamaha XS1100 engine showing the timing mechanism toward the front of the engine. While closer to the back of the engine we can see the shifter drum, starter clutch, and middle drive gear input. ⚙️
Sidecover Sunday:
Today we are venturing into the unknown... the timing mechanism for this late 80s Yamaha XS1100s have a mysterious vacuum diaphragm that I never understood what it does. Because there is already a centrifugal advance on the shaft.

The clutch and timing wheel of a Yamaha Stryker are exposed after removing the sidecover. The clutch "boss plate" is a vibrant purple.
The bearing which failed preventing the clutch to pull fully apart and disengage properly
Sidecover Sunday
This week's post is all about balance. This aftermarket clutch failed when the bearing for the shaft that pulles the clutch plates apart broke. Stonger springs were used increasing the stress on that bearing. Stronger isn't always better.

A view of the right side of a Honda Dream motor with its sidecover removed exposing the front sproket for the drive chain, and the flywheel/magnets which rotate inside a stator. Such an A/C system would have been quite innovative for the time since the modern silicone rectifier was still exotic technology, this bike used a Selenium rectifier to charge its battery.
A view of the left side of the Honda Dream motor with its sidecover removed. A centrifugal oil filter is visable along with the bike's clutch which is connected to the engine's crankshaft via a chain similar to bikes which have a separate "primary" box containing the clutch and primary gear reduction. Today, engines are smooth enough to directly connect the crankshaft to the clutch basket using gears.
Sidecover Sunday:
Taking a look inside a Honda dream motor restored a couple years ago. The Dream innovated by putting the engine, transmission & clutch all in one box. Today it's the most common design for a motorcycle engine.

Underneath the circular sidecover of the Yamaha AT3 is the ignition timing system- contact breaker points- and the housing of the dynamo which holds its "Field" electro-magnets and the brushes for the rotating "Armature."
The cover of the dynamo has been removed, showing its Field magnets on the right side and the rotating armature & commutator attached to the engine on the left.

An overhead view of the Armature which does double duty as an electrical generator and starter for the bike.
Today is a very special Sidecover Sunday! I'm posting one of my favorite bike designs ever, the Yamaha AT3. This bike has a DC Dynamo that generates electrical current and does double duty as an electric starter!
I think it's a beautifully elegant design.

An ignition coil, shaved down by a mill. High voltage windings are around the outer edge and the low-voltage wires- that also controls when the coil "fires-" is in the middle, barely visible under the molded plastic that covers the winding
I milled too far. The ignition coil with low-voltage wires mostly gone & center laminated iron bar removed. Smaller and larger high-voltage wire windings are mostly intact.
A mill cuts open an ignition coil that otherwise would have been thrown away for having a bad plug wire.
Ever wondered what's inside an Ignition Coil? I Have....

Small engine week, a Honda XL250 & Two-Stroke Yamaha 125cc. Both with their flywheel covers removed, I love these simple electrical systems, with separate windings for the ignition circut.

Inside the "primary" box of a newer Harley. The chain is connecting the crankshaft driven by the pistons to the clutch which is connected to the transmission. This is the first stage of refinement & gear reduction of the chaotic force created from the explosions within the engine.
The timing gears behind the sidecover of an "ironhead" Sportster. Behind these gear cogs are cam lobes which flick open the engine's valves (via pushrods/lifters) to let air/fuel in & expel exhaust.
Another version of the "primary" connection box between crankshaft & clutch that helps refine the imbalanced forces from the engine.
2 Sidecover 2 Sunday....
It's Harley week, these photos help illustrate what makes Harley's unique amongst new bikes, they continue to use chains to connect the crank to clutch, smoothing out the force. Also pushrods to open the valves.

A motorcycle four piston front brake caliper disassembled. The holes on the left & right allow hydrauilc fluid to pass between sides of the caliper, but in this case were clogged by congealed brake fluid.
A close up of the clogged fluid passage
Another clogged fluid passage
Hydraulic brakes are great until their fluid becomes more of a gel/goo. These calipers off a Triumph Daytona were causing the rider to pull in the brake lever until it almost hit the grips to apply the brake. A good cleaning solved the problem.

The "assisted-slipper" clutch on my Yamaha XSR900. It uses shaped pieces to compress the plates firmly together when under load reducing the amout of springs needed making the clutch lever easier to pull.
The stator cover of a Triumph Thruxron removed. The copper windings on the left have alternating current induced in them by the permanent magnets spinning around them, which is rectified into Direct Current to charge the bike's battery.
This little guy creates an undulating current in the pickup coil (bottom right) when it spins and creates a signal that the engine's computer "reads" to know where the pistons are and when to set off the spark & fuel injectors. It's design bears a lot of resembelance to a "tone wheel" which created the ringing noise in early telephone systems.
Underneath the sidecovers of Triumphs is a lot of beauty. These gears transfer power from the crankshaft to the clutch. And the outer gears are a gear reduction for the starter, giving the little electric motor the mechanical advantage it needs to turn over the engine.
Sidecover Sunday! What's behind those outer layers of motorcycle engines? It's fun to take a peek and see.
These are all from 2024 projects. Looking forward to jumping back into our busy season and the deluge of these "smaller" projects.
