It has recently been suggested that GLP/NLA intervention be embraced as a neurodiversity-affirmating practice (Haydock et al., 2024).(Neurodiversity refers to the idea that people interact in many different ways and that a difference is not a deficit to be fixed.) Some aspects of GLP/NLM intervention, such as embracing autistic communication, are consistent with neurodiversity. However, GLP/NLA is also associated with numerous ideas and clinical strategies that lack theoretical and empirical support. For this reason, Venker and Lorang (2025) believe it is premature to embrace GLP/ NLM as a neurodiversity-affirmative practice. Clinicians who are employing a GLP approach are generally adamant that they observe changes in their clients. That is quite possible, and probably likely, but the changes they observe may not be due to the premises of the GLP framework but rather to factors in the therapeutic interactions that might be found in many language interventions.
