Haggling over prices has always been a part of buying and selling. But the timing of buyer or seller responses in negotiations is crucial.
In "The Effects of Delay in Bargaining: Evidence from eBay" (April 2025), Jessica Fong and Caio Waisman analvze millions of negotiations using eBay's Best Offer feature to understand how delays between counter-offers impact outcomes.
What are the kev findings?
When sellers delay, buyers are less likely to carry on bargaining and more likely to reject offers.
And when buyers delay, sellers tend to . accept offers more quickly instead of negotiating further.
Overall, delaying tends to make negotiations shorter and push buyers and sellers to make decisions-accept or reject- depending on who is delaying.
