The deep ocean once again looks like something out of a movie, with sperm whales and giant squids locked in an evolutionary "war" that has lasted millions of years, and the scars Far below the reach of sunlight, where pressure crushes human submarines and the water feels almost timeless, another story is playing out. Millions of times a day, deep-diving toothed whales close in on squid in what scientists now describe as one of the most intense evolutionary arms races on Earth. In a new essay in the journal Limnology and Oceanography Letters, marine ecologists Henk-Jan Hoving and Fleur Visser pull together decades of scattered evidence and formalize how this silent conflict works. They highlight scars on the skin of sperm whales and beaked whales, left by ring-shaped sucker marks, and the hard beaks of squid packed inside whale stomachs. Every mark is a data point in a battle we almost never see. Cephalopods and survival in the deep sea For most of their 530 million year history, cephalopods evolved to escape fish and other hunters that relied mainly on sight. Camouflage, quick color changes and clever tricks with bioluminescence helped them melt into the background. That balance shifted about 34 million years ago, when toothed whales evolved echolocation and started hunting in the deep water where sunlight fades out. Suddenly the main threat was a mammal that hunts by sound instead...

Critical minerals demand spotlights ocean mining NEW DELHI: At the NXT Summit 2026, global policymakers and experts engaged in a wide-ranging discussion on the future of deep-sea mining and ocean governance, highlighting the need to balance economic development with environmental protection. The discussion began with Navin Ramgoolam of Mauritius, who highlighted the vast potential oceans hold for small island nations. He noted that although Mauritius has a large maritime zone and shares a continental shelf with Seychelles, it currently lacks the technological capacity to fully explore or exploit seabed resources. Namgoolam stressed the importance of partnerships with technologically advanced countries, particularly India, which he said plays a key role in monitoring and research in the Indian Ocean region. He also emphasized that African nations and small island states seek equitable partnerships that go beyond resource extraction to prioritize environmental concerns over basic survival. From a technological perspective, Ville Skinnari, Member of Parliament from Finland, highlighted the growing global focus on deep-sea resources. He noted that discussions around oceans have shifted over the past decade—from addressing plastic pollution and fisheries to exploring critical minerals beneath the seabed. Skinnari called for stronger multilateral cooperation and clear global regulatory frameworks to govern deep-sea mining, similar to international agreements on...

CamAdapt project strengthening climate resilience in coastal regions The Ministry of Environment is working with the CamAdapt Project to strengthen climate adaptation and diversify livelihoods in more than 82,000 hectares of ecosystems and 16 community protected areas (CPAs) along the Kingdom’s coast. The “Strengthening CPA Networks and Review Community Conservation Progress” workshop was held on March 12-13, in Kampot province. It was attended by representatives from the provincial Department of Environment and CPAs from Kampot and Koh Kong provinces, with the goal of strengthening cooperation and enhancing management plans. A March 14 statement from the environment ministry noted that following the meeting, all 16 CPAs revised their management plans to address gaps in climate adaptation, ecosystem management, community engagement and gender inclusion. They are building capacity to tackle climate challenges and ensure inclusive participation in conservation and community development, it added. The CamAdapt project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the environment ministry, the Fisheries Administration and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Cambodia. The project, with more than $4.35 million in funding, is helping improve coastal fishing communities and ecosystems in Kep, Kampot, Preah Sihanouk and Koh Kong provinces. The initiative also seeks to enhance marine ecosystems and biodiversity. On March...

Mystery Bacteria Found Inside One of the Ocean's Most Elusive Whales Scientists studying stranded pygmy sperm whales have uncovered three previously unknown genotypes of Helicobacter bacteria living in the animals’ stomach tissues. Pygmy sperm whales (Kogia breviceps) rank among the ocean’s most mysterious marine mammals. These animals are seldom observed and remain poorly studied because they spend most of their lives far from shore. They typically travel in small groups and dive deep to hunt squid and fish. Their quiet behavior and preference for offshore habitats make them difficult for scientists to observe directly in the wild. Researchers rarely encounter pygmy sperm whales while they are swimming freely. For that reason, much of what scientists know about the species has come from stranded animals. This is especially true along the southeastern coast of the United States, where pygmy sperm whales strand more often than nearly any other large marine mammal. Examinations of stranded whales have revealed several recurring health problems, including stomach ulcers. Many of these ulcers are linked to Helicobacter bacteria, a group of microorganisms that inhabit the stomach and intestines of many animals, including whales and humans. Using more than twenty years of records from stranded pygmy sperm whales, scientists at Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and...

Earth's oceans have prevented a severe global 'mega-drought' for over 100 years Imagine several of the world’s biggest agricultural regions slipping into drought at the same time. Wheat in North America. Rice in Asia. Maize in South America. All struggling together. It’s a scenario that would send shockwaves through global food markets. As climate change intensifies heat and shifts rainfall, the fear of synchronized global drought has grown. But new research suggests that while drought risk is real – and rising – the planet is unlikely to dry out in perfect unison. Ocean patterns appear to act as a natural disruptor, preventing truly global, simultaneous drought across continents. Ocean cycles and global drought Climate change is raising temperatures almost everywhere. A natural question follows: could drought also rise everywhere at once? Some earlier studies hinted that as much as one-sixth of the planet’s land could slip into drought simultaneously – a scenario that would strain food systems and economies worldwide. But the new research suggests the climate system isn’t that uniform. Teams at IIT Gandhinagar (IITGN) analyzed climate data from 1901 to 2020 and found that synchronized droughts typically affected only about 1.8 to 6.5 percent of global land at any given time. That’s far below earlier estimates. Instead of locking into...
