Text on the back of the photo says “The 1st Division in Aldershot has been engaged in fighting for oil wells at East Tisted, between Alton and Petersfield, as part of the Hampshire manoeuvres. The possession of the oil wells was assumed to be the direct cause of trouble between “Eastland” and “Wessex” two imaginary hostile states.”
#ObjectoftheWeek is this photograph of Life Guards belonging to the “Eastland” army resting with their horses near Alton on 31st August 1938 during an exercise.
