#OTD 9 November 1942. The press have released images of Texan-born Eisenhower. Described as 'bald and of medium height', a 'good talker, studious' and in possession of a 'keen sense of humour'. Which he will need: #OperationTorch does not exactly go according to plan'.
OTD in 1942 the Allies landed in Algeria and Morocco. Finally boots on the ground. #OperationTorch has begun for real. Meanwhile, somewhere in the desert, Rommel is waiting for them. #WW2. Thanks to persistent poster @rgpoulussen.bsky.social we have access to this great clip.
WW2: I’m still in November 1942 with the transport ships to North Africa on #operationTorch and @rboomhower.bsky.social is already one year ahead in November 1943 escorting his transport ships to the Pacific. Same war, different storytellers. We share a passion for Ernie Pyle.
7 November the #OperationTorch convoy is getting closer to its destination in North Africa. Reporter Philip Jordan would have LOVED to have this map of the Roman roads. They will land far left and march along the coast to bottom right Carthago! itiner-e.org via @romanpalace.bsky.social
7 November. I post each day about #OperationTorch. OTD in 1942, the Allied convoy was near North Africa. This map via @evansthecrime.bsky.social reminds me Roman soldiers also made the coast road from Algeria to #Tunisia. That’s the route the Allied troops will soon take. It’s going to be muddy.
OTD: 2 November 1942: Edwina d’Erlanger was off Madeira on board the S.S. Serpa Pinto which answered a Mayday call. From the evidence, I think it was from #ConvoySL125. It’s indirectly linked to #OperationTorch
I’m in #Tunisia writing about #OperationTorch 1942, when thousands of British soldiers tasted oranges and olive oil for thé first time. Next week I’m back in #Swansea, #Wales for a fortnight. Hopefully, under new check-in regulations, with some new season olive oil in my hand luggage. Want some?
November 2, 1942: #OperationTorch troops are moving towards North Africa, bringing war to the region and occupation of Ennejma Ezzahra, the d'Erlangers' palace in Sidi Bou Said, #Tunisia. Edwina d'Erlanger is on her way from New York to rejoin husband Leo in London. An 'incident at sea' occurs.
November 2, 1942: #OperationTorch is about to kick off. Convoys are sailing towards North Africa, over 100,000 troops on board. Not all will arrive at their destination. I'm following legendary story teller Ernie Pyle, by Nov 2 probably off Gibraltar. Read his account on archive.org
