The Trail Goes Ever Onward, and Where it Leads I Cannot See

A trail at Ecola Beach State Park on the Oregon Coast disappears into the morning fog. The worn path, which is barely one person wide, enters the frame just to the viewer's left to of mid-bottom. It describes a gentle S-curve as it winds between grasses, flowers, and tall shrubs to either side, heading into the fog-shrouded distance where tall evergreens are barely visible through the mist.

An American Dipper finds a pocket of relative tranquility and a foothold in the middle of the tumult of the lower section of Hole-in-the-Wall Falls in the Columbia River Gorge of Oregon. Horizontal color photograph: The frame is bound on the left and right by flying water, frozen in mid-air, as it plunges down the shed, black rock face of the waterfall. Out of focus water droplets appear randomly in the foreground, with several obscuring parts of the Dipper's body.

The lower plunge of Shepperd's Dell Falls, as seen from the Old Highway 30 bridge, diving down the mountain through a sea of greens. Vertical color photograph: the falls, rendered silky white by the longish shutter speed, enter the frame a little in from the top right corner, partially obscured by creekside trees. At about a quarter of the way down the frame, it starts it's 3rd drop, and the steepness of cliff it plunges down changes the vegetation and trees no longer occlude the view of the water as it races down the last 50 feet to the small plunge basin at the bottom. But even during this dramatic descent, the banks are line with ferns and other plants. At the base of the frame, the leaves of a tree high up the opposing cliff, create an arc that cradles the plunge basin.

Sun Rays Sneak Through

Sunrise, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon. Taken from the Portland Women's Forum State Scenic Overlook this morning. The color lasted only a few minutes, and then was gone. Horizontal Image, color photograph: the viewpoint is high above the Columbia River Gorge, looking east towards the rising sun. Cutting diagonally through the frame, frame from the center right and flowing down and out at almost the bottom left hand corner of the frame is the silver Columbia River. In the foreground, coming in the from the right of the frame is a massive cliff face topped with tree that extends about midway into the frame. Perched almost at its end is the Vista House, a light gray stone structure topped by a cupola that overlooks the Gorge from a lower, yet still elevated, viewpoint. Above the tallest trees on this cliff, in the lower part of the upper right quadrant of the image, the sun punches orange rays of light through a weak spot in the swirling clouds that come down to the tops of the higher peaks. The twin sunbeams reach across the Gorge and slowly fade out in the mists over the mountains on the far side of the river. A row of dramatic black-and-white clouds separate the beams from the only other patch of warm color near the top center of the frame, which is bounded by another area of dark clouds.

Sun Rays Sneak Through Sunrise, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon. Abstract sculptures in sand by the Pacific Ocean and sea creatures, Hug Point State Recreation Area, Oregon. Horizontal black-and-white photograph. In the upper right corner, serpentine features in the sand left by a sea creature lead the eye to the otherworldly hills and canyons cut into the beach by the outgoing tide.

One of the Points in Hug Point State Recreation Area in Oregon. Horizontal image: in the foreground is the sandy beach with a hug log pointing generally at the cave at the base of the cliff behind. The beach and most of the cliff are lit by the blue sky above as the rising sun has not cleared the Coastal Range to camera right.

The point rises dramatically out of the beach. About two thirds of the way up, the rock is covered by shrubs and trees finally able to grow above the high tide line. In the center of the base of the cliff is a cave: just to cave left, a section of the cliff is bathed in the orange light of the rising sun sneaking through the mountains and trees to the east. Just to the left of the edge of the point you can see the beach continue on. There's a pair of beach goers there, tiny compared to the point. Behind them, a cloud/fog bank clings to the ocean on the horizon. Atop the cliff, a row of trees, top thirds illuminated by the rising sun, break up the blue sky.

Dare Ye Enter the Sea Cave

One of the Points in Hug Point State Recreation Area in Oregon. That cave is inviting at a minus tide, but it's underwater at high tide.
