The spaceplane taxied down the runway. *It's a miracle we haven't been noticed*, was the thought running through everyone's minds. Serica closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "Are we ready?" "Serica, you know you're not supposed to do that." "Right, but we're still connected to the air recycl-" "Oh my god, Serica, just get us in the air already!" "Okay, okay! Jeez."
Dolores gripped the throttle stick tightly, and eased it forward. The air-breathing engines rumbled to life, plastering everyone to the back of their leather cushions. Before they knew it, they were airborne, the hangar rapidly receding behind them. Somewhere, a poor soul in what's left of the FAA is having a meltdown. But that was all someone else's problem now. As the atmosphere grew thin and the nuclear drive kicked in, joyous whoops rang across the intercom. Dolores contemplated calming them all down, but then scrapped the idea - she was a co-conspirator to one of the biggest heists in Human history, why was she trying to curb the enthusiasm? So, with glee and relief, she added her laughter to the chorus.
A spaceplane smoothly coasted to orbit, sunlight streaming through the polarized windows. On the 9th day of the 9th month of the Chinese lunar calendar, six brave souls would climb higher than anyone before or since.
