A powerfully built bird with brown and buff plumage, a dark orange tail, large yellow feet, and a hooked beak is turned face forward as it grips the top of a weathered fence. This is a red-tailed hawk, one of the most widespread hawks in North America. He startled me when he landed on the fence as they tend to stay high in the trees if anyone is is around.
