The #PlattAmendment solidified an American monopoly in Cuba and remained law for over thirty years before it was repealed and replaced in 1934 with a new U. S. law that “maintained the United States’ right to keep Guantánamo Bay forever – affirming it could leave the bay whenever it wanted,”

The #PlattAmendment also enabled “United States Corporations and banks – including J. P. Mogan & Co, Sullivan & Cromwell and the powerful United Fruit Company [later rebranded Chiquita Brands International Inc.]” to gain “control of Cuban sugar, tobacco, railroads, mining and utilities.”

Together, they drafted the #PlattAmendment, which said, “the U.S. could invade Cuba again whenever it wanted & barred future Cuban governments from making treaties with other powers. It also required Cuba to ‘sell or lease to the United States lands necessary for coaling or Naval stations.’”
