Jackson Pollock was part of the so-called abstract expressionism, a term first mentioned on German magazine Der Sturm. Then that term has been taken over by an art critic of the New Yorker, when he referred to American artists who were active between the decades of 40 and 60, and sought to cause an emotional or expressive effect through his works. When Pollock began to paint his works stretched a canvas on the floor, with no hard edges to receive the frame. What we see in his paintings is just the center of the action. The corners and the edges are arbitrary – could be closer or farther from the Center. But although his technique appears to favour the chance, Pollock claimed that everything was planned: "there is nothing fortuitous". In 1951 he decided to paint only in black and white and three years later stopped painting. In 1963, Salvador Dalí tried his hand at Action Painting, or as he termed it “Dynamic Painting,” on the panel show I’ve Got A Secret. Unlike Pollock, who used oil, enamel and aluminum paint, Dali opted for shaving foam (yes, shaving foam) to create his mini-masterpiece. As one would imagine, the resultant (comic) mess bears little resemblance to the quality of the lacemaker’s work—though I doubt that was ever the intention. Abstract Expressionism drew from Dali's belief of digging into the subconscious.
