There's something magical when you catch a glimpse of a Newt, an air-gulp bubble or the flash of a tail. Maybe because there so elusive & rare, or maybe it reminds us all of a time when we were younger, care free, and nature was more abundant? Can you remember the last time you saw one? #Pondwatch

Today's sudden heatwave brought in the first 2 Common Darters of the year to my garden pond in south Devon, joining Azure and Blue-tailed Damselflies. Emperor came to egg-lay briefly and Southern Hawker back on territory at 18:20! #PondWatch @BDSdragonflies

An immature female Migrant Hawker hangs from a branch of a hazel tree. She is a medium-sized dragonfly, predominantly brown, with paired lilac spots along her abdomen which will turn yellow as she matures. Her eyes, currently grey, will turn greeny-brown.

A male Southern Hawker hangs from a branch of a conifer. He is a large dragonfly with yellow, green and blue markings on a brown background. There are two bold yellow stripes on the front of his thorax, and a mosaic pattern of green and blue spots along his abdomen, with bold blue transverse stripes across his final two abdominal segment. His eyes are blue, yellow and brown, and his face is yellow.

Surprised to see a male Golden-ringed Dragonfly perched over my garden pond in south Devon this morning - only the second to do so in 35 years! Should be at running water, but they do wander widely. #PondWatch

For 30 mins at 5 pm the first territorial Southern Hawker of the year appeared at my garden pond in south Devon, joining a meagre 2 Azure Damselflies. I've only had 1 Southern Hawker emerge so far, but my neighbour's tiny pond has had 6! #PondWatch @BDSdragonflies

A photograph of a large wildlife pond. It is set in a rather wild-looking garden, and is covered in a thick layer of lime-green duckweed. There are also normal weeds growing out of the waterlily and white float, and the only underwater life that can be seen is the poking-up heads of the crispa weed underneath the duckweed raft.

A photograph of the same pond, only now its clear of nearly all the duckweed, except for tiny individual leaves, which clump together in spaces. The normal weeds have been removed from the waterlily, and that and the crispa weed have also been thinned out. The hose head is sprinkling water into main body of the pond to top up the low level, which is particularly important now that so much has been displaced from weed removal. The weed pulled out has been put in a pile to drain & let any wildlife crawl out. The fish always really like when I put the hose in the pond, for the extra oxygenation and food stirring. They jump up into the stream when it's sunny.

WIGGLE POND IS FREE AGAIN!

My Pond Hero finally came round & safely stripped out the duckweed. I can see #Frogs, #Toads, #Newts, #Tadpoles, & fish!

The waterlily roots are teeming with froglets, + thousands of tadpoles waiting for rain (soon, little'uns)!

It looks like the frogs in our garden pond have finished with their Spring endeavours for this year - they stay around the spawn for 2 or 3 days before moving back into the other parts of the pond. It looks like a bumper year #pondwatch #spawnwatch #ponds #frogs
