A view of a female zebra jumpingn spider, looking down on her slightly from the front. She's standing on a double glazed window, which is reflecting grey, but there's also two reflections of her, underneath her, one from each pane of glass. Her head is canted downwards as if she's admiring how she looks. Her legs and body are finely patterned with little, black, brown, and white hairs, giving her a mottled sort of appearance. Almost like she's been coloured in with fine pencil strokes. Her two main eyes are large for her head, black with white highlights from the camera flash.
Feeling 💩 today, but the 🦓🕴️🕷️ was on the window in the porch, so distracted myself with 10mins of trying to predict what she was going to do next, to get a 📷. I like this one as it looks like she's checking out her purty self in the reflection. #wildlifefrommywindow #arachnid #invertebrates #spider
The gilled bottoms of some fuzzy white mushrooms on a stick. On one fungus are two mites, one seemingly immature. Top left on the stick is another adult moss mite.
These guys are not spiders but fungi-eating moss mites (Damaeidae undet.) on slipper fungi (Crepidotus undet.)

Weather sucks again. Watch #bambooblebee groom in the sunlight! She recently closed that bamboo stick, hence seems to be done laying eggs into it. #invertebrates #masonbee

A log, without bark, in shallow water. Part of it is open to the centre; here it's hollowed out, with deep, blackish, round holes, tunnels made by shipworm. (Bankia setacea, not a worm, but a clam.) The outer skin of the wood has a pattern in grey and cream, made by a wood-rot fungus. The log floats beside another log, this one covered with green algae. The bottom of the stream is gravel, mostly smooth stones.

A large caterpillar with black bands and greenish yellow markings makes its way toward the end of a branch of dill, eating as it goes. Photo taken last summer
6 days until spring 🌱
When you finally see a swallowtail caterpillar on its host plant, it's pretty big dill

Photo of a stick insect, dorsal view, among broad green and red Corymbia leaves. The insect is red and brown and holding a cryptic pose: Rear legs roughly horizontal, middle legs diagonal and bent forward, and fore legs perfectly straight so they seem to be an extension of the insect's body. The result looks like a skeletal christmas tree.
Macro close-up of the same subject's head, focusing on its eyes which are striped and spotted in shades of red, brown, and cream.

A photo of a mottled brown beetle with yellow spots and LONG antennae resting on light blue painted wood. The beetle is thick with mostly mottled brown and light brown markings on its body with a few scattered spots of yellow. It has black eyes and mandibles. It's antennae are very long and arch delicate to the right of the frame.
As penance for my mistagging of the cranefly lovers as Cerambycids, here is a nice Longhorn #Beetle friend.

A little baby harvestman on the underside of a pale whitish stone facing left. The harvestman is mottled shades of grey and brown with quite a rotund body and a pair of beady black eyes. This one may be a juvenile Odiellus spinosus.
A little baby harvestman on the underside of a pale stone, head uppermost. The harvestman's body is mottled shades of grey with a darker, central 'saddle' area on its back. There is the beginnings of a trident in the form of a single pointed tubercle on the edge of the carapace in front of the eyes. Really not sure what this one is - maybe an Odiellus spinosus.
A tiny baby harvestman facing left on the underside of a pale whitish piece of old loose render that has come off a wall. The harvestman is mottled shades of brown and grey and has a darker central 'saddle' area on its back. There are pale, smooth rings around the eyes and the beginnings of a trident. This one could well be a juvenile Paroligolophus agrestis.
Finding quite a few little baby harvestmen at the moment. Most are to small to identify to species at the moment, all looking rather cute though! #arachnids #harvestmen #invertebrates
A flint towered church on a grey day seen from the north. The churchyard is bounded by a low flint wall and there are bare trees in the left hand side. In front of the church is a low, circular walled structure that holds water (presumably originally drinking water for animals) which spills out into a low basin and then overflows either side.
A tiny, circular bodied reddish-brown Book Scorpion with little pincers caught in a cobweb on the white washed wall inside the church.
A Rosy Woodlouse head down on the underside of a stone. The woodlouse is peachy coloured with two pale yellow lines running down the centre of its back.
Decided it was too windy to cycle yesterday so got the train to Sheringham instead. Visited church at Upper Sheringham. Inside found a dead Cheiridium museorum (Book Scorpion), a new hectad record. Outside, Rosy Woodlouse (Androniscus dentiger) was a nice find under a stone. #invertebrates

A yellowjacket (aka hornet), Vespula pennsylvanica, head downward, on old, cracked wood. The yellowjacket is black with broad, brilliant yellow stripes, crosswise on the abdomen (5 wavy bands, then a split band) and then in a varied pattern on the thorax and head. Narrow, brown wings, orange antennae, mostly yellow legs. Beside the insect, there's a small patch of lichen, as bright yellow as the hornet's stripes.

Large chestnut-brown millipede partially curled beneath the leaves of a zebra haworthia succulent growing in reddish sandy soil.
Late-night garden visitor.
This large chestnut millipede (Tylobolus castaneus) was tucked under one of my haworthias. They’re harmless decomposers that help recycle organic matter back into the soil.
Always amazed how much life shows up in the garden after dark.

A male Dark-edged Bee-fly feeding from a grape hyacinth flower. He is a large fly with a rounded body covered in mid-brown hair, and a hairy face. He has long, thin legs and a very long proboscis, which he holds out in front like a narwhal's tusk. He has brown eyes, which meet each other on top of his head, and his wings have a dark, scalloped mark along the leading edge.
My first Dark-edged Bee-fly of the year, a week earlier than last year's.

24-Spot Ladybirds (Subcoccinella vigintiquattuorpunctata) seen yesterday in the Yare Valley.
Last May we found very large numbers of their larvae in this patch of rough grassland so it will be interesting to see how they do this year.

Now to analyze the species. Osmia cornuta, the horned mason bee, seems to be most likely, but I have no pic yet that I could see the tiny horns in. So I don’t know if it’s a red-tailed mason bee with horns or just a red mason bee (O. bicornis). Both look a lot like red-tailed Bombus. #invertebrates
A metallic green insect sits on an iris leaf. Its wings are held next to its body and have large black patches on otherwise clear wings. It has a sharply-defined shadow and is angling its body to maximise its exposure to the sun.
Banded Demoiselle is my favourite species. The males make display flights with the dark wing patches making mesmerising patterns above the river surface. This one in Swindon in late June 2024. #libellente #weidebeekjuffer #invertebrates #ukwildlife
