A panoramic view of the Scotts Bluff National Monument in western Nebraska. The area was on the routes of the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails, as well as the Pony Express. The rock formation was named after Hiram Scott, a young fur trader who died in this area in the 1820s. Accounts vary on cause and manner of death, but many attribute his demise to abandonment by his fellow travelers. The monument designation was made in 1919 (President Wilson) The park later expanded in the 1930s and construction of a roadway to the summit was a Civilian Conservation Corps project (President Roosevelt).
