CHICKEN: A QUEER, VISUAL ECOPOETICS Andil Gosine IN NATURES WILD: Love, Sex and Law in the Caribbean (2021), I identify and consider some of the consequences of humans' constitution and declaration of our being 'human, not animal', paying particular attention to how this investment has historically fuelled racism and classism, and the punitive disciplining of gender and sexuality in the postcolonial Caribbean, including through the imposition of dress codes, legal frameworks, and nationalist discourses that continue to centre European Man' in its configuration of the citizen.? Most of the text sets out to demonstrate the high costs of the onus put upon humans from once and still colonised spaces, particularly the most economically marginalised folks among us, to provide evidence of humanity against accusations of animality. Centring attention to the relationship between strategies of racialised animalisation and the disciplining of sexuality, I also outline how the historical twinning of anti-sodomy and anti-bestiality laws produced the homosexual as animal and monstrous throughout the colonial period and also advanced the demarcation of Indigenous peoples as 'more animal, less human' - both framings providing powerful justification for colonists civilising mission. I end Nature's Wild with a call for refusal of complicity with this demand, both as a political response to the histories and consequences of racialised and homophobic forms of animalisation and as a necessary recognition of our kinship with other living beings in this moment of ecological crisis. Our answer ought to be, I suggest, a claim of animality. Taking this proposition seriously, especially as it shapes and might shape political
