Ships: HMS Ramillies & HMS Nairana Type: Royal Soverign Class Battleship & Seaplane Tender Nation: United Kingdom - Royal Navy Location: Firth of Forth, Scotland, United Kingdom Date: December 1917 to March 1918 An American sailor; likely from the USS Wyoming, incorrectly identifies the HMS Ramillies as her sister HMS Royal Oak. Ramillies was the only Royal Navy battleship in active service that had a dazzle camouflage applied during World War 1. She used the dazzle scheme from November 1917 to March 1918. In the background on the left, HMS Nairana a converted passenger ferry that was requisitioned by the Royal Navy for conversion to a seaplane carrier. The ship was ordered and started before the war, but its construction was stopped with the war. In 1915, work began to convert the ship. Upon her commissioning, she was assigned the Battle Cruiser Force in Scapa, Flow. She would see active service in Russian waters during that nation’s civil war. In 1919, she would be sold and rebuilt to her original plans. She would end her career as a ferry between Australia and Tasmania. *photograph from a private collection Please like, follow, & share the page on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, & YouTube.
