A graphic showing an open book in the upper half, of the title page and frontispiece of a book by Sappho with a minimalist line illustration of two nude women and some hills and plants. Below this is a close-up of a poem in Greek, with the lacunae indicated through impressions on the paper. Text in white on black reads, “Book & prospectus of Sappho: Fragmenta Nova. Edited by Denys Page; printed by Wesley B. Tanner; paper made by Kathryn Clark; frontispiece by Cheryl Miller. Berkeley, CA & Brookstone, IN: The Arif Press and Twinrocker Paper Mill, 1981. RBS 7655. Gift of Claire Vanolieb.”
A graphic with a black background shows two pages from a 16th-century printed book. One page has a woodblock illustration of a woman holding a crucifiix with Jesus on it in one hand, and the Bible in the other, with a block of text above this image. The other page has two columns of text in Italian. Modern text in white reads, “Dialogo d[e] la seraphica uergine sancta Catharina da Siena. Venice: Cesare Arrivabene, 1517. Object ID: 22542.”
A graphic with a black background shows the front and back covers of a square-shaped book with colored paper and pen illustrating two dolphins playing in the waves on the front, and a boat and oil lamp at sea on the back cover. An open spread has line illustrations of waves and marine life surrounding a poem titled, “El Mar.” Text in white reads, “Mayra Sablón, Compás de Fantasía. Illustrated by Adrián Milián Suárez. Matanzas, Cuba: Ediciones Vigía, 2018. RBS 9238.”
For #InternationalWomensDay and #WomensHistoryMonth, we present three books featuring works by women across the centuries: the Greek poet, Sappho (ca. 6th c. BCE); the Italian saint, Catherine of Sienna (1347–80 CE); and the Cuban children’s book writer, Mayra Sablón Rodríguez (b. 1960).

In this print, which accurately follows in reverse Bruegel's 1567 painting of the same title (Munich, Alte Pinakothek), three figures—a soldier, a farmer, and a clerk—are shown sleeping off the effects of their overindulgence, or waiting for more drink to imbibe—as the clerk does at left. Some of the remains of their meal are strewn on the platform encircling the tree in the center, while the mountain of buckwheat in the background and the house covered with tarts at right indicate this land has plenty to spare. The image's moralizing intent—to decry the vices of sloth and gluttony—is apparent from the first part of the Dutch inscription below: "The lazy and gluttonous farmers, soldiers, and clerks get there and taste all for nothing."

And what, according to Pieter Bruegel the Elder, does one always need in the Land of Cockaigne to indulge in idleness? A book, of course.
