Excellent piece for today's Rat Bag Lit. Practically a haiku, it's so short, but damn it's a powerful one.

Beautiful hardcover edition of the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

Sprayed page edges are lovely, and special editions slap so hard. What are your favourites?

Mine right now is The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, sprayed deep green with seven golden wedding bands. (Image stolen from the evil A empire because my I lent my copy out.)

Book #22 for 2025: brilliant, irreverent, clever, and vulgar, Mordecai Richler’s Cocksure. Not for the squeamish, but as it’s set in swingin’ 60s London I thought it was an apropos read for this trip.

The ultra-CONs in Utah are banning books this year. In addition to the 13 in the graphic, they've also blacklisted:

"Like a Love Story" by Abdi Nazemian.
“Damsel” by Elana K. Arnold
“Empire of Storms” by Sarah J. Maas.

Sounds like recommended reading to me.

I've read three of them so far. Didn't think much of Watch Out for Her at all. Jennie's Boy was okay but not spectacular. By far the one I've enjoyed the most so far is Etta and Otto and Russell and James. Wonderful characters, entertainingly written. #CanadaReads #ReadMoreBooks #ReadDammit #CanCon

A copy of Michelle Good's novel, Five Little Indians, stands on a desk at a 30-degree angle to the camera, with the spine and front cover showing. The cover features the silver trunks of birch trees in the foreground on the left and right. A large blood moon hangs in a dark black sky, the words FIVE LITTLE INDIANS in stark, gritty contrast in all caps. The white, snowy lower half has five upside-down silhouettes marching in a queue across the centre of the book to represent the five main characters of this book. Michelle Good's name appears in red all caps at the bottom.

The top of the cover features four stamps from awards the book has won since its original publication.

Whoever approved this manuscript is utterly inept at their job. Watch Out for Her is amateurishly written, with insufferable characters and a paper-thin plot. How did this unimaginative drivel even get published?

Woof, what an absolute dog of a book.

The cover of Death at the Savoy, a pocketbook paperback novel: a blue building facade with each of six windows featuring a simple drawing of the main characters: 1. A man kisses a woman’s wrist. 2. A bottle of champagne pours into an eagerly held flute. 3. A man sits and smokes under the shadow of an ominous steak knife. 4. A woman looks over her shoulder in an evening gown. 5. A young woman in a short skirt looks out the window in shock. 6. A gun is pointed menacingly across the room.

Suuuuuper light murder mystery set in the late 60s at the Savoy Hotel in London. There’s violence (but not too gory), sex (but not too graphic), & paper-thin characters plied with Noël Coward’s prodigious bar tab.

3 out of 5.
