What do we need?

Acknowledge that life happens to doctors too

Return to work programmes in all UK countries

Guidance for employers and local departments

Funding for returners to access resources

Funding for departments to support returners

Mentors, Role Models and Support Networks

I never thought I would leave medicine

But life happens to doctors too

Life is not linear
Careers are not linear either

Acknowledging that is the first step in providing support - to those thinking of leaving, and for those wishing to return.

Finally ✍️

but IMPORTANTLY!

Periodically, review your options and what you want from your life & career at that time.

Circumstances change.

Top tip?
Talk about how you are feeling and find out as much as you can about your options.

Do what is right for *you*

You are not alone.

Some thoughts on choices and 'regrets', during and after my time away from medicine

Some doctors will need to take time out

Doctors who are thinking of leaving medicine need support

Doctors who want to return to medicine need support

Doctors are human too

Examples of ways a returner to medicine can be supported in their return

Examples of ways a returner to medicine can be supported in their return

Acknowledging that some doctors will need to take career breaks is the first step in providing support for their return.

And we also need to 'support the supporters', providing guidance and training to the local departments who will support the returner.

I was asked recently what 3 things would help most to support a doctor to return to medicine.

Broadly, I think:

1. Signposting
2. Local support
3. Mentoring

There is much to talk about within each of these, but some examples are below:

Thank you!

When your medical career doesn't follow the expected path, it can feel quite lonely.

But there are many of us who have taken alternative paths, or left medicine entirely, or left then come back.

Hopefully this thread can help someone.

When I was thinking about leaving medicine, I was feeling lost.

To be honest, I was struggling - tired from the long training, balancing work and family life.

I didn't ask for support but I wasn't offered any either.

What advice could have helped me?

A thread 🧵

One of my very early observations on returning to clinical practise:

it is easy to underestimate the level of knowledge and skill you have when you have been in a role for a while, and have been well trained in it

I decided to try to learn to tie a surgical knot, to be more slick at securing lines.

A cup handle, sewing thread and a YouTube video!

(please don't judge too harshly, I'll keep practicing!..)

Even assuming some of these will be doctors who returned to selflessly assist temporarily with the pandemic response e.g. post-retirement..

..imagine if there were more initiatives aimed at retention and return.

Watch Doctor Cha | Netflix Official Site Twenty years after leaving her medical career, a housewife returns as a first-year resident — struggling to find her footing in a job full of surprises.

When I was doing my clinical attachment, I watched this on Netflix 👇 after a recommendation in a returners' group

I didn't think I would be watching K-drama for return-to-work encouragement, but 🤷‍♀️😅

All power to you, Dr. Cha 💪

This post from @csimmons21.bsky.social 👇 reminded me of an old post of mine.

After reading some inspiring stories from women who had returned to medicine following a long career break, I decided no more 'what-ifs'

And am so glad I did!

Maybe I can inspire others, too.

Managing the primitive part of our brain • Lean Practice We all need to manage our emotions as at times this can take over our ability to think, hindering our decisions and dampening our execution.

After managing a critical incident, each anaesthetic felt like a simulation situation for a short while!

Has anyone else experienced something similar?

How best to manage this hypervigilance?

For me, it's partly about taming the 'chimp' 🙉

Our training and career trajectory is expected to be linear - we are 'channelled'.

But I have heard so many inspiring stories from returners and those who have taken different routes in their careers.

Alternative paths should be championed!
