Susan was lucky (e.g. #RightToBuy). But also very good at making her own luck.

You’ve never heard of John Stanley, but he broke Britain’s housing market

There’s a decent theory that the unintended consequence of automatic #RightToBuy have been disastrous.
IIRC the (discounted) proceeds go to the Treasury so there’s no way councils could afford to build new housing stock
🚨Exclusive: Investigation from @bigissue.com reveals councils lost £15M repurchasing 'Yo-yo Homes' sold under Right to Buy, with sellers pocketing profits as homelessness rises. Labour faces calls for reform. #YoYoHomes #RightToBuy #HousingCrisis

Reversing #RightToBuy

Today marks 100 years since the birth of Margaret Thatcher.
Among her legacies: the Right to Buy scheme — one of the most damaging privatisations in modern history that has fuelled today’s housing crisis.

#RighttoBuy - always opposed by @greenparty.org.uk.
A massive, disastrous #Privatisation.
Why is it continuing under this Labour government?

Imagine the Gov directing councils to build energy efficient homes, appropriate to need, location and growing population, to replace/increase stock?
At anytime they could change the policy....

>>The way out of the housing impasse is by privileging occupancy over property rights, flattening the tenure hierarchy, expanding social housing and building other decommodified housing alternatives. Resolving the housing crisis depends upon reversing and replacing the changes to the British […]
There has been a lot abt #Thatcher and the #RightToBuy in the #UK media this week. Here are my and colleagues’ thoughts on this policy’s impact on #crime :

Right to buy in England ‘fuelled housing crisis and cost taxpayers £200bn’ #news #worldnews #uknews #uk #england #housing #homes #house #righttobuy
The #RightToBuy scheme was only a disaster because Thatcher banned councils from ringfencing the money to build more social housing. It helped thousands of people to have housing security. The costs and woes of the extortionate rental market wouldn't have occurred if social housing had been replaced
Thatcher’s right to buy scheme cost taxpayers £200bn & gutted social housing. Millions rent former council homes from private landlords. The housing crisis needs bold action now. #RightToBuy #HousingCrisis #SocialHousing #UKPolitics

No surprises here - a hugely damaging policy that provided short-term gains for a few at great long-term cost, effectively using public assets to buy votes. Good to see the government tightening up the rules.

Thatcher stole public assets to use as bribes to buy votes.

I remember my late father saying that #Thatcher's #RightToBuy #CouncilHousing would be a disaster for the Social Housing stock - leading to a #HousingCrisis. Dad, you called it correct.

Disappointing to hear @matthewpennycookmp.bsky.social, responding to Q from @elliechowns.bsky.social re #RightToBuy, tell #HoC during today's #housing Q&A that his @uklabourparty.bsky.social dept stands by #RTB. This ideological stance is regrettable.
@heathernstaff.bsky.social
The country desperately needs more council houses. But with #RightToBuy councils are filling up a bucket with a hole in it. This is a very good move.
Time i) to ditch #RightToBuy #RtB completely, not only on new-builds (sic); ii) bring in #LVT #LandValueTax as @theifs.bsky.social/others support.

12/ did I hear right that #R4Today SME builder wants 'mandatory amounts' in #LocalPlans to be scrapped?
So she means mandatory environmental measures? Mandatory so-called affordable homes?
#Growth starts from the bottom, not private profits creaming off the top
#RightToBuy destroyed housing mixture
I thought it just created a two-tier market with an unofficial market in rent controlled property?
Freezing #RightToBuy makes sense though.
