A solitary nun kneels in profile against a deep, nearly black background. Her body is arched upward, chest lifted and spine elongated, with her head tilted back and face angled toward an unseen light source. Her eyes are closed, and faint scars or ritual markings descend from the outer corner of one eye, etched delicately into the skin. The expression suggests endurance and release rather than suffering.
She is wrapped in layered, ash-colored fabric that clings tightly around her torso and arms before falling into heavy, weathered folds around her legs. The cloth appears aged and stained, with darker discolorations near the hem, pooling on the ground beneath her knees. Her arms are bound behind her back by the same material, creating a restrained posture that still feels intentional and composed.
A long veil extends from her head, draping down her back and trailing into the surrounding darkness. Behind her head floats a soft, imperfect halo of pale light, circular but diffuse, giving a subtle sacred geometry to the composition. Wisps of smoke or mist gather around the lower portion of her body and the ground, blurring the boundary between figure and space.
The lighting is controlled and dramatic, illuminating the contours of her body, the tension in her posture, and the creases of fabric, while the background remains void-like and silent. The overall atmosphere is ritualistic and solemn, capturing a moment of transformation held between devotion, strength, and stillness.

Ultra-close frontal portrait of a ceremonial figure in an ornate hooded headdress. Captured with a 105mm macro lens at f/5.6, isolating every pore, freckle, and metallic reflection. The face, freckled and sun-warmed, is framed by braids and fabric embroidered with silver, copper, and beadwork. Dangling metal ornaments hang across the brow, catching highlights and glowing like molten threads. The muted earth tones of cloth are punctuated by shimmering metallics, creating a balance of matte texture and reflective brilliance. Shallow depth of field renders the face hyperreal and tactile, with background softened to a painterly blur.

Profile close-up portrait of a ceremonial figure with geometric face paint in white, gold, and muted green. Captured with an 85mm lens at f/4.0, emphasizing sharp surface detail across skin texture, pigments, and ornament. The figure’s headdress is assembled from layered textiles, beadwork, feathers, and metallic fragments, weathered with age and intricate in pattern. Braided hair, bound with thread, beads, and rings, cascades from beneath the crown. Soft diffused light highlights the metallic glints and earthy pigments without overpowering shadow. Composition isolates the profile against a neutral backdrop, focusing attention on ritual adornment and painted form.

A strange and alluring vintage 1950s 60s handmade 900 silver Tribal modernist Ritual Figure design brooch. Likely a one of a kind, and such an unusual design! A standing figure with elongated stick-like arms and hands, one hand holding a small child, and the other holding a baton or wand. I'm guessing some sort of ritualistic figure, but I can't say for sure. Looks African to me, but could possibly be Latin American pre-Columbian revival as well. The figure is patinated black in the recesses and polished bright on the raised areas for contrast. A striking piece!! Measures 2-3/8" tall by 1-3/8" wide, and weighs 20.6 grams total. It's quite heavy for the size! Marked at back as shown, "0.900" for 900 silver which is just a hair under the sterling standard. Excellent vintage condition.

Portrait of a horned alien elder seated on a pale stone throne, head bowed in a meditative pose, adorned with cracked armor, black ritual garb, and a necklace of bones, surrounded by a wooden halo hung with amber-eyed totems, staged like a ceremonial tableau, hyper-detailed textures, dramatic studio lighting, f/4, 85mm lens.

Made for a large altar honoring ancestors, this figure’s crusty surface resulted from repeated ritual applications of sacrificial materials including animal blood, millet porridge, plant juice, and oil, infusing it with a vital energy. Its braided hairstyle, thin beard, amulet-pendant, and ritual staff (on his left shoulder) suggest that this figure portrays a high-ranking man. The extremely dry environment of the cave where it was stored helped to preserve it.

Sacred medicines and divine protection are central to the belief of the Kongo peoples (Democratic Republic of Congo). The Kongo believe that the great god, Ne Kongo, brought the first sacred medicine (or nkisi) down from heaven in an earthenware vessel set upon three stones or termite mounds.

A nkisi (plural: minkisi) is loosely translated as a “spirit,” yet it is represented as a container of sacred substances which are activated by supernatural forces that can be summoned into the physical world. Visually, these minkisi can be as simple as pottery or vessels containing medicinal herbs and other elements determined to be beneficial in curing physical illness or alleviating social ills. In other instances, minkisi can be represented as small bundles, shells, and carved wooden figures. Minkisi represent the ability to both ‘contain’ and ‘release’ spiritual forces, which can have both positive and negative consequences on the community.
A fascinating example of a nkisi can be found in a power figure called nkisi nkondi. A nkisi nkondi can act as an oath taking image which is used to resolve verbal disputes or lawsuits (mambu) as well as an avenger (the term nkondi means ‘hunter’) or guardian if sorcery or any form of evil has been committed.
These minkisi are wooden figures representing a human or animal, such as a dog (nkisi kozo) carved under the divine authority and in consultation with an nganga or spiritual specialist who activates these figures through chants, prayers, and the preparation of sacred substances which are aimed at ‘curing’ physical, social or spiritual ailments.
