Something only apparent when a fully surveyed modern plan of the Nunnery is complete is that the tower is offset about a metre to seaward. This suggests the tower was built first, then the Romans didn't have enough space to fit the fort walls in on the east side so

After several years' work by members of our team, the draft manuscript of 'A Late #RomanFort on #Alderney' is off to the publisher. Next comes 'peer review'; we will then address the comments before the final text is agreed. Hopefully BAR Publishing will publish the book in mid-2026.

The #RomanFort at #Carrawburgh, Brocolitia, straddles #HadriansWall. It was built by AD 130 when 16 Roman Forts were added to the Wall.
Temples and shrines were found in the vicus outside the fort, incl. Coventina’s Well and the #Mithras temple.

Two copper alloy arm purses, one found at Thorngrafton, #Northumberland, the other at #Birdoswald #RomanFort.
Most purses were made of leather or cloth, and only survive in anaerobic environments. Both contained coins, now empty.

Two successive bridges straddled the North Tyne.
The 1st bridge carried #HadriansWall across the river soon after AD 122 where it continued towards #Chesters #RomanFort.
The 2nd bridge (AD 160s) was part of an imperial reorganisation of the frontier. It carried a road.

Is this cheating for #StandingStoneSunday? These upright stones form the edges of a doorway in the military bathhouse at #Chesters #RomanFort on #HadriansWall in #Northumberland. Still in place almost 2,000 years later.

The #RomanFort at #Magna is being excavated. For the past two years, and now a third, archaeologists and volunteers are exploring the northern fort ditches, the area between Hadrian’s Wall and the fort, and now excavations are exploring the praetorium area inside the fort.

Stormy skies on the Hadrian’s Wall path this weekend. The sheep in the foreground are on the east wall of #Brocolitia #RomanFort on #HadriansWall in #Northumberland. The fort was constructed after AD 122 and before AD 130 as plans for the Wall changed.

#LancasterUniversity excavated at Bowness-on-Solway #RomanFort in 1973, a site dug by the great Hadrian's Wall scholar Eric Birley in c 1930. Finds from his trench-fill included a bottle of 'Benbow's Dog Mixture', evidently used to treat the dog that appears in at least one of his site photos...

The Roman Temple of Mithras dates from circa AD 200 and was in use until
circa AD 350. Now it contains 3 replica altars (originals are in The Great North Museum). But you can see that people passing by leave little offerings.

On 28 September 2023, the famous Sycamore Gap Tree was felled as "an act of vandalism". During the first week of October 2023, I accompanied my husband, who walked the Hadrian's Wall Path, and I took photographs of one or more other beautiful sycamore trees along the path. This series 'Beauty is the Antidote to Grief' is the result.
