Here’s one of my favourite objects, the Harford Farm brooch. There’s a repair on the front, and the back has a runic inscription on it reading either ‘Luda repaired the brooch’ or ‘Luda makes amends by means of this brooch’. I was lucky enough to see this at Norwich Castle Museum in 2024. #runology

I was all excited to attempt to interpret a runestone. This stands in Hólavallagarður Cemetery, Reykjavik. I took an inadequate picture 18 years ago, and today I traced over what runes I could make out on its surface.

Why didn't this occur to me sooner? A really easy way to clean up messy pyrographic work is simply to sand it down! After a few minutes of 150, 220, and 400 grit, it's much more consistent and legible. Go on, guess what it says. #OldNorse #runology #runes #futhark

Larger letters would have kept the wood intact and left more room for the pyrograph, which got hotter and messier as I went. But it was an educational exercise, I enjoyed learning what it was like, and I know what I'd do differently next time.

Thought I'd try runecarving for fun. I found this stick some animal stripped of all bark, so that seemed neat.
I penciled in the runes, but the carving was difficult. I don't know what kind of wood this was but it tended to flake and fracture with detailed work.

It sounds like runecarving is phonetic to the extent that you can trust your own sense of phonetics to render how you feel appropriate. And if you get the nuance wrong? Anyone who could correct you is dead. Choosing the runes tells a story of the carver, as important as the message. #runes #runology

My dream last night was a version of extreme #runology. While inspecting a massive rune-stone I somehow managed to break the stone in two (having the strength and power to lift up its one end).
Our online short course starting in January 2026 focuses on #runes – a writing system that developed in western Europe in the first millennium AD.

A telegram from 1917 in Norway, sent by the archaeologist Haakon Schetelig to the runologist Magnus Olsen in Kristiania (Oslo), informing him of a runic find at the Eggjum farm in Sogndal.
This telegram went to the Norwegian scholar Magnus Olsen in June 1917 - with the information that a stone inscribed with older runes had been found at Eggjum in Sogndal. Now known as the Eggja stone: kulturarvsdata.se/uu/srdb/1ef4...
